Avant guard stuff, where the music becomes abstract, structureless and crosses more into "performance art"... sometimes in some genres that's actually not too bad I find, like electronic music (sometimes.)

Funnily enough most people think that's what jazz is, but it doesn't have to be.

For the folks that don't like jazz, have a listen to "koto song" by Dave Brubeck..

I don't like manufactured music.

Anything that Simon cowell is involved with needs to be cryogenically frozen & ejected into deep space.

I would never judge anyone for listening to something I’m not keen on as we all have different tastes.

The one thing I really struggle with is Jazz especially heavy Jazz and Death Metal! Death Metal is just crazy and not sure how anyone can listen to it but fair play to those that do.

I think Trad or the old school stuff gets a beating and maybe fair enough. Still amazing songs like Jolene

There are certain songs I really dislike.

Currently it's Beyonce's new one.

She's so much better than that annoying drivel

"All that shite r and b ballix. Also women singers like sade and Whitney. Fucking shite. "

Whitney had one of the most expressive and powerful voices ever.

I can only think of Aretha Franklin that would be in a similar league.

Way way above Beyonce/Christina/Maria Carey etc

People give country a hard time.

I think Trad or the old school stuff gets a beating and maybe fair enough. Still amazing songs like Jolene

I like the modern contemporary country and it’s pretty varied and has some original stuff."

Love the modern/alternative country music stuff that's coming out at the moment. Love a bit of Zach Bryan.

Can't beat a bit of traditional Country either like Kenny Rogers and Dolly!

"Anything that demonstrates musical illiteracy, such as bass lines that basically double the melody line. That covers a lot of the crap churned out nowadays.

Oh, and Philip Glass. I've rehearsed and performed a couple of his works on the basis that there's other stuff I only got after going through that process with it. Nope, still didn't work. You can keep it.

What do you think of Steve Reich?

I like his compositions."

Steve Reich is amazing.

I’ve seen his music performed twice - both times everyone around me seemed in a trance from the music .

I’m with you on jazz, but accept loads hate it. Bad jazz is really bad, but there’s lots of utterly amazing stuff. Not mad, not a cacophony just beautiful, and/or funky as f**k.

I think the problem with all genres is that it’s the bad stuff that people usually get to hear. They then associate the genre with that.

Nost of the well-known hip-hop sounds terrible I think, but there’s amazing acts like The Roots who people barely know - amazing lyricists, producers etc.

But even that, or Glenn Miller big band style is what people inevitably think & go to.

I'm thinking things like Mario Biondi - This is what you are

Or

Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit

Or the Kyoto Jazz Mazzive's take on - Love is Everywhere.

Or Izo Fitzroy (newish female Londoner) - Chasing Days

Or Alice Coltrane - Journey into Satchinandana

Or Herbie Hancock - Saturday night

(What a tune!)

Or Donald Byrd - Change

Or Terry Callier - Dancing Girl

None of which youd expect to hear really in your stereotypical Jazz cellar bar

There's a musician from London called Richard spaven (drummer). His music gets classed as jazz, but it touches lots of styles I think.

The issue I have with a lot of country is the "bending" of sung notes. The way that many singers start a line sing8ng the first note flat and slide up to the right note.... it really annoys me.

I’d say rap, but I like sone artists - Eminem for example.

Even jazz ^above I can get into if I like it.

I’ve never actively targeted a genre to to dislike. Because if I’m tapping my feet, it kind of works for me. I’m a pop music fan for that particular reason. But I would say rap is the one genre I find it very hard to find somebody I like. Whereas all the others I can find many artists can produce music that I would be in to.

There’s not much that stirs me in Jazz though, and Happy Hardcore doesn’t really do anything for me.

"Jazz"

I think it's hard to dislike jazz completely, it's such a huge genre. Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simmone, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Micheal Búbblè, etc... are all Jazz Singers.

I'm not a fan of a lot of the more "free form" Jazz, but there's a huge amount of great music too.

I think there's a perception of jazz that it can be structureless, or abstract. (I don't particularly like that style either.)

Can I recommend 2 tracks though that you might like as a non jazzer?

1. If you like the sound of mellow piano playing, try "koto song"- by Dave Brubeck quartet .

2. If you're into a more modern sound, try " Spin"- by Richard Spaven
