Just noticed my mum seems to be shrinking as she gets older (just turned 65). I thoght i needed some advice on the elderly so obviously i thought of the fab forums. Does this happen to eeveryone? Will she ever stop shrinking or just disappear?

The sad news is we stop growing in our early 20's and start to age. We're at our tallest in the morning when we get up, so if you want to 'stop shrinking' measure yourself when you get up.

Same applies to weighing yourself, you get a more accurate weight first thing.

Stop leaving the poor woman out in the rain then! Or at least provide a brolly when you send her to the shops.

I heard it happens because the discs between vertabraeget smaller /more compressed...Happens to most of us apparently. Plus we tend to stoop more.

Rather worrying when yr a short arse like me!

Very true. All those bits between ever join wear out/shrink so people do get shorter. Only bits that dont stop growing are ears and nose. Sadly.

I think 65 might be quite young to have shrunk noticeably. However she is 65 which is very young in terms of being able to go about her daily life without help so don't take her to the doctor that's just insulting, chat to her as the adults you both are and if you're concerned suggest she goes.to the quack under her own steam.

I hope that she's fine and well

i said the same thing the other day that people shrink when they're older and i got laughed at. im adamant that people do, but apparently its physically impossible to shrink.

i would show the people i was arguing this thread, but it would go down like a cup of cold sick

My great aunt bless her, she was very regal looking but was only 5ft 1 at her tallest (like me and my grandma) she started shrinking with age and by the time she died aged 96 she was about 4ft, well that may be a bit of an exageration but i bet she was no more than 4ft 6 lol

we shrink everyday when walking etc then when we sleep the compression releases.

its well documented that people shrink in old age

if its sudden and she is quite young it could indicate problems with her spine

As you get older the spine compresses. Even the young are shorter at the end of the day than at the start. Ears for some reason do continue to grow.

Ugger, i am nearly 61, better suggest that tesco start doing coffins so my kids can get the clubcard points. At 65 she might still think of herself as a youngster, and if she thinks she is, she is. So there.
