Have you ever traced your family tree? How far back were you able to go? How did you do it, did you use Ancestry or somewhere else?

I had my dogs DNA done just because I was curious about her health and now I know more about her relatives than mine!

I’ve never bothered with myself. I love history but I quite like not knowing much about my own family history because then I can feel equal to anyone, not better or worse, and I like and feel that my future isn’t limited by my past

Not personally. My mother has. On one side back to where in Africa my great (x a lot) grandmother came from and where she became an erm... well what's the term for a woman who caught the eye of a plantation owner? Yeah that. Fun. My mother is rather proud of that. The beauty that runs through the generations. Tad problematic.

The other side, back to the 1700s.

I'm very much a fusion of a myriad of heritage.

That sounds really interesting but 10 years, wow! I suppose I better settle in for a long road then.

I need to do this.- I've a photo of my great grandparents from probably early 1900s

From what I gather I'll probably have ties to the indian subcontinent & russia...but I suspect even wider.

Manchester (she/her)

Ancestry. Ranged from early 20th century to 14th century. The Irish and Carribbean parts tend to come to a hard stop pre transportation, due to colonialism and the owning of people.

I traced my mother's line back to the mid-1700's but then decided it was taking up too much time so gave up. I used Ancestry.

"Have you ever traced your family tree? How far back were you able to go? How did you do it, did you use Ancestry or somewhere else? "

Yeah. I got back to 1600-something but it's mainly been done via the splendid digitised records in the Netherlands and some in person research.

I use Geni to build the tree. I have used Ancestry for some of the UK family but I think it's very expensive. The Netherlands manages to supply way more stuff for free.

Traced my parts of my family back to just after the Norman conquest at 1097 is as far back we have managed to get.

Some interesting characters pop up along the way…

My dad traced his side of the family back to the 1700s and strangely back to the town I'm now living in (it's not the town my dad lived in or came from)....

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe

My dad's grandfather got his side of the family tree drawn up in 1910. This was compiled by a local vicar from various records, and includes transcripts of wills, the earliest entey dated 1541. One guy was a Viscount of Portugal and a Knight of the Crown of Italy.

For my mother's side of the family, I have a large, framed copy of the family tree. There's quite a lot of Knights in that lot, and the earliest entry dates back to 1188.

"Have you ever traced your family tree? How far back were you able to go? How did you do it, did you use Ancestry or somewhere else? "

My brother spent a couple of years painstakingly researching our family tree on bothe my mother and father's sides of the family. He used Ancestry, National Archives and dozens of registrar's archives to put it all together. He got as far back as the 1700s on one side of the family and the 1600s on the other side before both trails went cold because of a lack of any more records.

Reading through it all was absolutely fascinating after he'd put it all together. Turns out I'm the distant descendant of some good people, but also some proper rogues too.

Nope I'm not for dragging up the past and I'm sure their would be a pretty murky past in my family my mum was related to a wealthy Scottish family in fact Scottish royalty

My wife has her father's tree all the way back to 1066! Her great relations actually produced a book for the family there's two large fold out sheets with the tree. Mothers side currently researching we have archive cards. My own family proving more difficult as my mother was adopted and no father named on the birth certificate.

London (She/Her)

There’s a family belief that we’re closely related to a VC winning WWI fighter-pilot ace and that means we are strong people who stand up for ourselves and others. So an uncle researched it.

Turns out that’s not true at all, no connection to the pilot and our family is mostly workhouse or chimney sweeps, with one poor lady locked away because she believed she was a dog. The family was not happy to learn all this

I've gone back to 1500 something, my dad's side has a surname that is very unusual so easier to trace, I did my ex husbands before we split, that was fascinating for me, I've done parts of Doughnuts but he has a surname that is quite common and his family is VERY complicated!
