A Chippy Near You...

Waterstones, Argyll Street, yesterday.

I was intending to buy 'The Takeaway Secret' by Kenny McGovern for a colleague's 30th, who loves cooking/baking/takeaways...

Even though it's in it's 2nd edition, there's not one in stock in any of their Scottish bookshops.

So I bought two genre books for myself. Think I'm gonna love them

Someone gave me some money for my birthday, told me to spend it on something I really wanted.

So I took my son out for the day. And that’s not me saying I’m unselfish, I just couldn’t think of anything else I wanted to do than spend time with my eldest son, who is about two go off into the world, and probably have less and less time for me.

So anyway, I chose to drag him around to a snooker hall, and we had a few games, and we went out for something to eat, and a bit of windowshopping

A little bit of what you like, does you good Shiv

I played designated driver last night. Stayed on the soft drinks all night and drove everybody home at three in the morning.

How is that doing something for myself? Because it meant I didn’t have to stay the night. It meant I could be home today to tinker with my car. Chop firewood. Do some DIY. Walk the dog. Visit the farm shop. Bake some bread. Make some soup. I’ve had a lovely day.

This might sound like a humble-brag, but it's not intended to at all...

Spent over a month in Sri Lanka years ago (aye, my ex of 15 years is Sri Lankan): still arguably the most profound experience of my life.

Her father I loved. Shared the same dry and absurd sense of humour of the Marx Brothers.

He took me fishing for the first (and unfortunately last) time. We were there 4/5 hours. 30 degrees, perfect blue skies.

Caught nothing, but it mattered not a jot. Glorious experience.

I try to do it at least once a month "
