Feeding the birds.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Does anyone else get pleasure from feeding the local wildlife in particularly the birds? I`m lucky in that living out in the sticks I have a large front and back gardens and I`m also surrounded by fields. Also, because of the area I have places that can supply bird food by the sack! I regularly put out a general seed mixture and meal worms, seperate feeders of Nyger seeds and peanuts. I also put out fat "cakes". Among the seed mixture are sunflower seeds and rolled peas as well as a good cross section of grain and small seed.

Over two half hour periods this weekend I`ve had the following feeding :- Blackbirds, Thrushes (sadly only a couple), Yellow Hammers, Sparrows, Robins, Blue Tits, Great Gits, Long- Tailed Tits, Reed Buntings, Black and White Spotted Woodpeckers, Green Woodpeckers (again only a couple), Pied Wagtails, Gold Finches, Chaffinches, Collared Doves, Pigeons and Pheasants! I also get (but try to discourage) Magpies, Jays, Crows, and the occasional Kestrel! The occasional buzzard has showed their face too!

I make sure I do everything I can to discourage birds from coming in my garden. I'm owned by three cats, one of which is a prolific hunter. If the birds stay away from my garden they have a better chance of not becoming my cat's latest toy

P.O. Box DE1 0NQ

I used to at my old house, I had several feeders up and attracted many species. The crows nesting in a couple of chimneypots over the road used to take full advantage as well. There was a holly tree outside my front window and a squadron of redwings (members of the thrush family) stripped all the berries from it in about 2 days, they came for about 8 yrs and probably still do

We got a pair of blue tits nesting in our bird box that my son wanted in the garden, yes feed them on a daily basis.

Just hope the starlings don't wreck the nest like last year!

When I was with my ex, we used to throw out old fruit into the garden, and there were a pair of crows that loved grapes, was so comical watching them try to pick as many as they could at one time! i think the male managed 4 at a time!
