The Dungeons and Dragons thread got me thinking.

I see a lot of people online who are clearly deep into their fantasy, cosplayers, LARPers etc, and people's fervour for these things seems to be growing in intensity as the years roll by.

So here's my question.

If technology ever advanced to the stage where it was possible to live in a tube (Avatar style) hooked up to various drips and pipes to take care of your physical needs, whilst your mind occupies an alternative reality in a dream like state, experiencing the game as though it were real, you were literally inserted into Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings etc whatever your thing is, completely unaware of anything outside of it.

Would you do it?

Now there's an interesting thought?

To make the experience as immersive as I describe, there'd need to be no awareness that what you're experiencing in the game isn't real, so you wouldn't have an 'off' switch with you for when you want to leave, rather you'd begin each session with an idea, that being that when you want to visit 'the other world' (reality), you have to open this particular book. When you read it, you'll wake up, but you'd have no knowledge of that in the fantasy world.

The lines would then really start to blur as to which world is in fact the real one?

Part time - Possibly, but it would very much depend on which fantasy/sci fi universe it was set in…. As a Warhammer 40K fan I can categorically say no fucking way to that verse in particular thank you very much

Try looking at litrpg novels. They are one of the fastest growing sub genres of literature and they are all about living in virtual worlds, having stats you can see and powers. Great escapism
