Over 100mph over 3 years ago, caught on camera by an unmarked black BMW that I was trying to get away from.

The nice policeman let me off with 3 points and a 60 GBP fine, when he realised I was not a girl racer but a middle age woman with a responsible job after I grovelled for being in the wrong.

Not clever I know.

"Very fast on my bike"

Naught - smack bottie..

Some people here are a sandwich short of a picknick... Just the speed, where isn't important.

My first ban was for an average quarter mile speed of 120mph, slow by later events but that was on a public highway. Was a 40 mph zone - back in the 80's speeding wad tolerated more than now.

Average exit speed from Quarry on a stock 1ltr mv agusta is about 80mph and if you stop the wheel spinning up on the exit apex you can see 190mph before throwing out the anchor - all legal !!!!

The difficulty is knowing..... mostly you can't rely on the speedos in the average car to be anywhere near accurate once your're doing over a ton.... not that many standard cars can cope with going over 120mph.

On track days I have exceeded 150mph... alas not in any of my own cars.

speed is easy, *sustained average speed* over a significant distance or time is a whole other ball game.

cf TT100, averaging 100 mph over the entire manx course is not trivial, even today

with plenty of speed and a then literally brand new brand new z1100a1 not yet realesed for sale to joe public I did the 270 miles from "x" in cornwall to the hammersmith flyover in 3 hours 43 minutes once, and that was all A roads back then (1980), for an average speed of 72 mph, which included *regular* fuel stops, most of the time it was pegged at 140.

I was widely regarded as insane and unbelievably lucky to achieve this.

Most exciting was Cambridge to Manchester in 1 hour 52 minutes (170 miles). Two cars in convoy with a police escort for the last few miles through Manchester City center as we didn't know where the hospital was. This was pre sat nav days.

Anyone that knows cars knows they are actually very tunable and reliable once you upgrade one or two bits. And lotus engine slams straight in then tune it up some more

I never had to do a head gasket on mine. But then I uprated the radiators and water pump pretty much when I brought them. Although the 1.6 engine is awful. The 1.4 or 1.8 is ace

My one and only speeding ticket was for 96 on a 60mph road on a 1000 Honda twenty years ago. The worst bit was the queue of cars driving by while I was getting booked that I'd just blasted by somewhat in excess of my charged figure...

Nowadays I'm very privileged to drive test cars for my job, so in that respect, just under 200..

3.7 to 60 In a scooby type R ?

Must have had a serious amount of cash thrown at that to lose almost 2 seconds as they are pretty well tuned when they leave the factory.

To lose 0.4 of a second in my car i had to basically rebuild the engine! As anyone who plays with engines knows getting almost 2 secs quicker out of any car takes one hell of a build

Hull

About ten years ago, I hired a car from one of the major groups and was a returning customer, having had some issues with them a few years before and used another company instead.

As a mark of appreciation of me going back to them, the hire company upgraded me from a Group A car to one of their Executive motors a top of the range Saab!

As I cruised around the M25 late that night, becoming used to the car and all of its gadgets etc, I was horrified to find I was doing 120 mph when it actually felt far far less!

So easily done, in such a quiet and powerful car.

"Did someone say 0-60 in their Civic Type R was 3.7 seconds...my arse. Factory spwc they just manage 6.7 seconds....the only way that would do that is will some serious amount of engine work...turbo or supercharger, fully forged internals...the lot. Even then its a huge doubt.lol.

It's a Subaru impreza wrx sti type r which has a factory spec of 0-60 of 4.7. It's a jap import from 1997 onwards "

That was the time quoted 3.7 0-60

standard type R is almost 2 secs off that time

when you consider the Veyron 16.4 SS is 1.3 seconds quicker coming in at 2.4 seconds for 0-60 that must be some kind of scooby to be only roughly a second off a 16.4 litre engine

Would love to see it run the 1/4 mile may even bring out one of my toys to play alongside it

The Veyron doesn't have a 16.4 litre engine, it's 8 litres. Plus it weighs almost 700 kg more than an Imprezza.

Not sure what state of tune Cali's Type R Imprezza had to achieve said acceleration figures but wouldn't rule it out.

I used to have a Yamaha RD 200 which would top 95 mph and beat most 250's, then I had a Beckett tuned RD 400 which blew most 750's into the s, acceleration was awesome but it was a compromise between that and top speed. I had several different cog ratios which I messed about with constantly. Top speed on that would beat my Kawasaki Z750 but it handled like a pig on castors

I made it quite clear it wasn't a civic type r but a import subaru.

It was running 418bhp and was the only car I've ever driven that was mine that I could play with motorcycles at the lights. Being a biker it was a good laugh.

People need to learn to understand power to weight ratios.

Oh no idea what it did quarter of a mile, but my metro managed less than 14seconds which is pretty impressive really.

The type r was about 4.7 standard. Mine was anything but standard. I don't do standard. I forget it's exactly torque figures now but it was good and that's what counts on acceleration.

Power to weight counts for a lot , my zx10r is 200 bhp at the crank and will run the quarter in 9.7 at 149 mph with just a slip on can

I know of 2 metros that could do that speed not far from where I live. Fair enough both of them have had 2ltr turbo engines put in them and have fully forged internals with a t28 turbo plus loads more. There really popular and loads of them at the rover meets I used to go to

Not many opt for that option. How did it affect handling? I'm assuming it was old tseries engine or was it something else. I wouldn't mind but I didn't have the fastest of the modified metros by a long way. Guy i know has one running 4wd and full evo8 engine and running gear.

Good engines. I didn't use them due to worries about making them to front end happy. As I had a few friends with 2l novas etc that found handling seriously affected by the weight change

I've seen at least 10 of them over a couple of years. Ive only been in ine of them but The handling was crap. All right in a straight line but don't even think about going round a corner. See that's why I opted for the tuned k series as it is pretty much same weight as the one I took out. Good for 170Bhp without to much hassle. And found them great around sprint tracks.

My cars were mostly tuned for being fast around tracks, not top end speed. I would rather have my cars geared for good acceleration than top end speed.

I've got a friend that has got a forged 16k series engine that has the compression dropped down and been trying to get it off him for months now to go in my little 200 bubble so I can put my old t25 on it. Same as how he had his before someone crashed in to it. My cars are normally bodged together so they work

68 BHP more than the late Colin McCrea's own works car !

and what sort of engine was put into a metro specifically ? did you mention a Lotus engine only built 2 metros that were quick so would love to be enlightened further

And where was the metro tested please at drag strip i presume i go to them very often and a sub 14 sec should have stood out somewhere on my database of quick times for road cars

google metro 1.8 at pod and you will find lots of videos of metros doing 14secs and under..

13.9 is a good time.. and at pod.. in a gti vvc.. a lotus engine goes straight in.. but any 1.8vvc gives good power.. you can get 14 sec quarter out of a metro gti vvc.. with not a lot of work..You could no doubt do much faster if you could get the power down.. but its hard as your limited on that..

Too much power and you will just spin and get no traction what so ever.. really its not hard to find the metros that do between 13.8 and 14.2 at pod.. they were quite common place a few years back.

And 418 for a scooby isnt a lot in my books.. friends cars are far more bhp.. but I go for acceleration.

Talk to martin at reylands.. he is well into his metro conversions now.. there is a video of his metro at a track day playing against cosworths..

I used to run a few car clubs.. I know my stuff..

when I was up at court there was a boy there who was caught at roughly same speed in a Audi rs 6 and was still banned and caught again driving while banned no jail sentence also think Scottish law very diff from English law

Is Scotland not part of the UK then?! And do they not record the speeds people are caught at?

I just can't find any reference to anyone caught going faster than the case I quoted on UK roads (including Scotland) I even checked the Guinness Book Of Records, which also quotes the case I stated...

196 mph on the A12 in Suffolk a few years ago. My friend wanted to show me what his new Lambo could do
