When will the social media platform X stop being referred to as (formally known as Twitter)

My nan’s spare room.

I mean why not just carry on calling it Twitter or call it X.

What’s the point.

What other things have changed their names but still get called by their old names?

I still call starburst, opel fruits and there’s a shop near me that’s now a local Tesco or whatever they call it, I still call it the name it was 3 owners and 8 years ago.

When they get the domain name x, which is not available.

There is a house in the village that 50 years ago was occupied by a retired gent by the name of Mr Richards, those of us who were here then still refer to it as Mr Richards house.

Reminds me of the "artist formally known as Prince." He had a similar fate with his name when he stupidly changed it. He will forever be known thus, so perhaps X, formally known as Twitter, will have the same fate

Prince changed his name to a symbol in protest at the restrictive contract he had with his record company. The only way people could refer to him was "the artist formerly known as..." Once the contract came to an end and he could record as he wished, he changed his name back to Prince

^100% this. The branding is all over the shop and very confusing.

If you type in x.com it automatically defaults to twitter.

Maybe they should try xxx.com but I fear that may have other connotations!

Manchester (she/her)

I find that what people call the social media platform depends on their political leanings. People on the right are determined to please Space Karen and call it X. People on the left don't like Space Karen and call it Twitter. People in the centre or trying not to piss off the right or left call it "social media network formerly known as"

I find that part of the problem in referring to it as X in text, especially formal text, is that it's not always clear. 'Twitter', even if someone doesn't know what it is or hadn't heard of it, is obviously the name of something. 'X' doesn't have that, or sometimes even if it's obvious it still 'looks wrong'. Especially when X can have other meanings and uses as well. So for me in formal writing (which is my day job) it's usually some variation on "X (formarly Twitter)" to ensire clarity.

Maybe the fact we need to do that is a sign that it's not a good strong brand, or that Twitter was stronger. Maybe it'll become one in time.

Because Elon Musk is a teenage boy in a man’s body. He’s tried to call lots of things X over the years but the grown ups in the room stopped him because ‘X’ is only cool to teenage boys, or boys in men’s bodies.

Sadly there were no grown ups around to stop him ruining Twitter.

Tom (formerly known as Essex) is no fan of Elton Musk. But many of these comments are a bi-product of aging.

The young ones will call it X. The older ones will not embrace the change.

Tom still calls a radio a wireless, a trannie sometimes (see the difficulty there). Some of you will still be calling it a beat box.
