Army to accept beards

Reports that the British Army will accept soldiers sporting beards. The British navy has long allowed their sailors to wear beards which is because it gives protection against cold winds while at sea. Will this boost numbers? Standards are slipping guys. It's all over the news

"Why are standards slipping?"

They’ll be allowing tracksuits and trainers on parade next.

This is a slippery slope, mark my words!

Beards were an issue for getting a good seal on gas masks. Tbh if it came between survinging a gas attack and my insta profile my actual life would take precedence over my virtual one.

Beards and exposed tattoo's are fine in my book, only an issue where safety is at risk such as wearing a respirator or you could be identified by an enemy by your tats (and therefore your family via FB, Snap and other social media). The only thing I ever wanted from my military colleagues was an equal commitment to protect each other and not get killed.

Beards also mean that masks cannot seal against biological/chemical weaponry

You're unlikely to need a respirator working in logistics in Bicester or similar.

I'd imagine they'd need to be shaved off prior to operational deployment. Pretty much like in the Navy.

Pioneer Sgts have worn beards for a couple of centuries.

Paddy Mayne and all the original SAS soldiers wore beards when on active service in the middle east during WW2. A huge proportion of special services soldiers still do today when on active service, especially in the middle east and in the past in Afghanistan.

The reason beards got banned in the military was not because of appearance.

It's because beards can interfere with respirator equipment.

Moustaches are allowed.

I wore a beard while in the army, way back in 1984, ok I was only young back then and the job I did allowed me to not cut my hair or shave.

Didn’t shave/grew a bit of a beard while in the army and deployed overseas and on exercise.

Was one of the perks of doing jungle training

The military is underpaid, understaffed and under equipped but sure the ability to wear a beard whilst not deployed (yes it is a shave when deployed rule) is what's going to be the downfall.

Jog on

All this talk of respirators. Don’t the Navy use them?

Lots of pics of soldiers with beards too. Long Range Patrols, Special Forces, etc.

Pretty sure Sikh soldiers wear beards?

Isn’t there also a Rastafarian Association in the Military?

Slippery slope? Not really.

beards dont make a difference to how professional a person is within their job, people talking about standards the RAF and NAVY have allowed beards for years and the army are just going in line with that i have been in for 19 years and see this as a positive step forward not only for recruitment as the army is on its arse but for the moral of the younger troops.

Why does it matter? As long as it is not really long and scruffy and at risk of getting caught in things during manoeuvres etc then it should not matter. Think a beard is last thing to be worrying about in battle. On a separate note I wanted to join the army in 1996 when I was 16 but they did not let my sort in at the time.

I dont see this as standards slipping.

The military has been having to make concessions to drive recruitment for a long time, due to not actually being an attractive career prospect for many.

They had to make concessions on prior drug use. They also made concessions on visible tattoos (hands and neck).

On my last deployment to Iraq, we worked alongside an army unit, and about 1/4 of the junior ranks had fresh hand tattoos as they had just allowed it.

While the pay and conditions are crap they will not attract enough of the 'brightest and best'

Guarantee if there was a genuine NBC threat everyone would be shaving.

So it states within policy if there is an exercise that will be using CBRN like environment then beards need to be shaved so there be it people just think the worst and it actually looks professional when it isn't scruffy if it's scruffy then it comes off
