Somewhere In The Ether…

Ey up again my good folkies

I’ve mentioned it on here previously, but I have a real love of foreign tv drama and films.

One country that never ceases to enthral me with the sheer quality of out put is Korea.

I’m presently watching Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and highly recommend it for lovers of fantasy, boasting as it does a delightfully intricate, interwoven plot involving reincarnation and retribution - it’s sheer quality!

I've been wanting it for 10 years and always goes out of stock.

It's one of them films where you have every emotion (well I did)

Past Lives.

It's about a Korean concept called "inyeon" which is a sense that you've met someone before, almost like a life partner in a previous life.

I am sure this is very relevant for us Swingers and is always a danger if we have a partner, then meet someone who you have this very strong spiritual connection with.

As with many Korean series, it is rather leisurely and slow in its story telling (and there is admittedly a fair bit of padding - a staple in many Korean dramas) but stick with it - I promise you’ll be hooked in no time at all and the rewards are wonderful.

Of special note is the cinematography which, from the very first episode is truly breathtaking

Korean cinema was amazing when it was more art-house in the 90s and during the first period of the hallyu. However, since the mid-00s, it's become increasingly more k-pop-idolised in terms of acting, and the *ahem* quality of the acting.

There are some odd gems in the mix every now and then, but mostly always fall into the same tropes.

I also loved a Korean film about palace intrigue in the 17th century.

Started Bulgasal yesterday, after a re-watch of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which I was very much in the mood for

Cinematography - you're right. Stunning, and it more than made up for any story-padding.

I particularly liked his adoptive father's characterization - it was a foil to some of the other themes and characters.

It's called Zindagi gulzar hai, translates as life is beautiful.

I Saw The Devil (2010) - Brutally violent but very tense and highly original police revenge thriller. It even gets lumped in as a horror film due to its graphic scenes but its not, its so much more.

I love Korean zombie output and both of those were brilliant (I’m eagerly awaiting the continuation of both)

I see that there’s a zombie series on Netflix called, Happiness which I have on my ‘To watch’ list

My current favourite is "Extraordinary Attorney Woo".

Woo Young Woo is a young lawyer with Asperger's syndrome. She boasts a high IQ, an impressive memory and a wonderfully creative thought process, but she struggles with everyday interactions.

My initial fears were the series was not going to be sympathetic to the main character, and it could easily and cruelly degenerate in to something approaching the Victorian equivalent of "Bedlam" where the rich went to laugh at those with various afflictions.

But my fears were unfounded. The series does a marvellous job in portraying the life and the challenges of the lead character, and it really shines a spotlight in to her world and how she navigates it in her own unique way.

Personally, I feel it should be compulsory viewing for those who are not neurodiverse.

Looks like All Of Us Are Dead will return later this year, but sadly Kingdom may have been cancelled
