Reports that a club in London called the Garrick is being criticized because most of the members are men. Is it so bad to have a men only club when we are in the 2Oth Century. Women have Women's Institute and let the menfolk enjoy their time together

Is it a men's club? If so that's cool let them have it.

If it's an exclusive club open to both genders but the majority are men. Then maybe thier selection process needs looking at or they should bite the bullet and make it a men's club.

Mens only clubs have been around for a long time & I'm not sure it lead to them improve their social skills to communication or respect others in society, especially the opposite sex. Thinking of every male grouping - in nigh on every sport theres an element of laddish mob mentality, even the volume of men here & how they behave. The police & laws against violence, were created by men to force men to behave more orderly, as a collective.

That said, I think mens' only clubs that focus on actively improving their mental health resilience, build up their ability to maintain support networks & enhance social/ communication skills, would be beneficial to them & society in general.

Do men do better in mixed company or in men only company? Men in marriages live longer than single men. Is it because of what women do for them that they won't do for themselves - look after their health, live more intentional lives, have access to female support networks, etc. ? Maybe..

Whether men only clubs would go the way of the earlier ones or not, remains to be seen.

I'm as feminist as they come but this is just demonstrably arse. If your experience is that most groups of men are violent and disorderly, and most groups of women aren't, then that's an incredibly skewed and sheltered set of experiences.

Many of the men at this "gentleman's club" probably haven't thrown a punch in their lives, and if they have then it certainly wouldn't have been in the club or around the group of men going to this club. The most violent thing they might do is insist on a point of order

Who created the police and laws? What are the stats on who commits violence in group settings? I'm not accusing anyone.

I'm also pro men only clubs to improve mens quality of life.

My experience here is that mens groups in controlled settings like at matches, aren't violent or aggressive. Without the match security, police and fear of the concequences though I ponder would I feel the same? I've been to countries that are more lawless, power corrupts - they are much scarier places. And for balance, I acknowledge that women are just as capable of committing violence & aggression.

I think it is good that there are still places men can seek sanctuary in the company of others without the fear of being man bashed for every phrase they utter or opinion they hold, sure, if there’s a shortage of bar staff or cleaners then women should be allowed access to avail themselves of these job opportunities, I mean we’re not living in the 1800’s.

Considering that we are in some sort of modern mental health crisis, places where men can get together and chat honestly and openly with each other should be encouraged.

As men get older, their circle of friend usually gets smaller and smaller to the point where some guys have no-one to talk to. It's incredibly damaging and is reflected in suicide rates being so much higher for men.

I know that is not the debate about the club in the news, but the media narrative of there should be no men only clubs isn't helpful.

There's enough unofficial ones to add ones...British Legion, working mens clubs, cricket clubs and golf clubs where the smoking jacket can be deployed and shitchat can ensue on a biblical scale. The Masons etc etc.

Not for me yet. Still prefer a pub with the guys.

I don't believe segregation is a good but I understand why some peeps may desire it, so if it makes them happy to attend men only or women only then it's all good. Knowing there'll be other venues allowing acceptance of variety to us without barriers of exclusivity.
