A great speech, elaborated on by Welles from the original dialogue, but one that I believe is rather inaccurate and unfair - still, Harry Lime is hardly a reliable character

All men between ages 18-34 are reservists in Swiss military. They keep their weapons at home and are on standby to be called up. At least I think so.

Also, they were never invaded by Nazi Germany because it’s nearly impossible to attack Switzerland through the mountain passes without being annihilated. Hitler thought about invading to take possession of their massive gold reserves and foreign currency holdings.

That’s correct, Switzerland does not have its own language. Bordered by those 3 countries, in general terms you’ll grow up speaking the Language of the nearest

Champéry, Switzerland

As a swiss born guy reading this, It does make me smile and bring a few chuckles (thanks for that)

Switzerland has a few things it's known for around the world.

Various beautiful landscapes & mountains.

People think we all own expensive watches, have hidden bank accounts and own expensive houses

(all this is, as in all countries, a myth, for some do, most don't)

Cheese production is one of them, with gruyère, emmental (which is not french by the way, it means valley of Emmen), appenzeller, Tilsit, Tomme, vacherin, etc.

with our cheese dishes like Raclette, Croute Au Fromage and the various types of Fondues which was initially created by shepards ending the season in the mountains, and they had water, stale bread, stale cheese, and alcohol (kirsch... which means cherry liquor) and found a way of eating it, by melting it all together, it then became a traditional dish, obviously with non-stale products.

Watches, cars (smart), Pharma (novartis, and formerly serono), banks, weapons industry, neutrality, hosting international organisations.

A few other interesting things were the creator of the stratospheric balloon Auguste Piccard, his son Jacques Piccard helps create the Batyscaphe Trieste (a submarine)

The CERN in geneva, is a european research center where Tim Berners Lee and his team created the premisces of the internet, and where you can find one of the largest particle collider in the world (with yearly open days).

Chocolate is a famous one, yet surpassed by belgium chocolate for my personal taste. Switzerland was a precursor in chocolate making by adding milk to it, then selling it to the aristocracy, finding it way tastier than just the cacac beans which were too sour.

Song Smoke on the Water was written there, when the concert location took fire in Montreux, and deep purple were in the house of the director of the montreux jazz festival, overlooking the unfortunate fire.

A nice thing about switzerland is it's privacy. Many celebrities, athletes, etc. enjoy coming there as we do not tend to bother or pester them. we might cross them in the street, and if eye contact is made, a smile, a nod, maybe a hello, passing by, no stopping... just as another human being.

We have hidden bunkers in our mountains all over the place, with airfields in them too.

A few athletes are famous around the world, in cycling, skiing, tennis, snowboarding, triathlon, horse riding,

A few singers too (yet not so many ??) Gotthard, stephan eicher, young gods, sophie hunger, krokus, dj bobo (song Chiuaua )

When i read nazi gold, i do have to smile, as it was also a lot of US and other allies gold in there too :D (so nobody wanted to attack, as they had their assets there), considering what other countries have done in colonialism, and still do nowadays through warefare and economics, but enjoy pointing the bad

Note that switzerland was one of the poorest populations in the 1500 and the peasants were also mercenaries fighting for england, france, amongst other armies, to feed their families.

And last but not least, honestly, when they are open, there are a few nice and fun swingers clubs and saunas
