Have we lost social skills since covid ?

I find these days I don’t know how to flirt anymore, or probably even pick up Signals I’m being flirted with … mind you coukd be my own complete lack of self confidence that means I don’t notice

I have a theory it’s because of the whole lockdown thing as I don’t go out out that often these days .and we are more and more attached to our screens these days ( she says posting online lol )

I have struggled with communication since I became a Mum/parent Carer as I don't really have any friends and have virtually no social life, and as I have little-to-no time for hobbies, I don't really have anything to talk about.

If someone talks to me, I don't know what to say, other than something like "...I like killer whales...".

Since COVID? This has been happening for at least a decade

To be fair, it's not that we're losing social skills - it's more that our skills are adapting the the environments we socialise in.

Your social skills have modernised

I had the same worries when I split with my ex of 12 yrs…your “flirting” becomes specific to both of you n your own quirks…go out in the real world n crack a joke you think is hilarious n just get blank looks. It took time but it’s worked its way back, just keep at it n look for the little wins x

I think it is more to do with our use of screens which means we are less sure in our interactions irl.

Dating apps have also taken away the need to flirt, as swipe is easier.

It's a lifelong affliction for me. Don't know how to flirt and completely oblivious when someone is flirting with me. Perhaps because I'm always amazed that someone is thinking of me in that way and wants to flirt with me.

I'd agree that social anxiety does increase when there's a long time spent not in the company of others. But there's also an underlying element of lacking confidence in general.

Well, there is in my case.

.

I don't think I've ever flirted, before lockdown or not. I'm not flirty. I think so, anyway.

Back to the OP - self confidence can definitely make you more or less receptive to it. Aware of it. When you're happier with yourself, you're more likely to spot it.

I think the rise in online dating/flirting etc might have led to some uncertainty when it comes to face to face interactions. That being said, I don't think flirting in real life is a lost art.
