How difficult is it for you to find a good one?

In my experience they start out great but gradually begin to do what they think rather than what you ask for. I know and understand what suits my hair and I'm well aware that having it cut like a certain celebrity won't make me look like them. However they all seem to want to cut it shorter by stealth.

I got lucky. The first one I went to was perfect. Been going to her every few weeks for about 5 months now and it’s so far so good.

Took me years to find a good barber though.

Somewhere

I've got mega thick hair that needs thinning out a lot. Most use thinning scissors which drag it. Only found a couple who do it properly with a razor, but both have moved away.

I’ve given up trying to find one that actually listens to what you want. Every time I’ve went in the past, I walk away unhappy.

I cut my own hair now. If I mess up I’ve only got myself to blame

I go to people who are training at an academy. Never been disappointed. Half price or less £15cut wash and blow dry and finish

My hair is quite thick but it styles quite easily without thinning. My current stylist seemed to understand at first but time before last she started using thinning scissors on it before I could stop her so had to carry on to even out the thinning. It's also noticeably shorter. It's like 'old woman! Cut thine hair'

I’ve given up!

I’ve had enough of having my hair clippered by equipment that has not been cleaned after their last customer. I know most people have clean hair, especially when getting the old barnet cut, but some don’t and it gives me the proper ick.

I hate the boring inane chat.

I hate the that they always cut off more than I want gone.

I hate that I get my hair cut every 3-4 weeks but it only looks good for one of those.

I bought some clippers and I now shave my head over the bath. It’s free, quick, simple and always looks the same. Un-fucking-believably sexy.

Mine needs long layers too. I don't straighten it any more but if I think it might rain I definitely wear a hat be because it frizzes so easily and takes a flaming long time to blow dry

Mine was a recommendation from a friend and she is amazing. It too me ages to find her and I'm holding on to her for dear life. If she moved away, I'd cry. She cuts my hair how I like it, puts up with me changing my mind every 5 mins and always makes my crazy colour choices work. She's about to do another colour change for me next week. They aren't easy as my hair can be an arse and I avoid bleach at all costs yet she knocks it out the park everytime.

Fully agree. I've been to practically all in our small town and can't exactly find one I particularly "like" that I will frequent. Women's hair cuts aren't cheap either!

He is quite happy with his barber, he's been going to him for years and it's only 9 quid. They can chat about football and the barber seems a nice chap - even though I wonder if offering cans of beer to customers at 7am on a Saturday morning is the way to go! He seems busy most of the time so I presume it is!

Really, really difficult. Joy of living in a not particularly mixed area - I've been told over the phone they can cut/treat whatever black hair, arrive for a consultation and it turns out they can only if it's relaxed.

My cousin in law owns a salon and one of the women who is working there is a good friend and is trained in afro hair luckily. The only downside is she's in the Staffordshire moorlands so it's a bit of a trek but worth it. No more dire cuts, frizzy state reducing - winning.

It’s a nightmare..

Me and my mum use a mobile hairdresser as my mum just couldn’t manage a salon with her mobility issues. Finding a decent mobile hairdresser is like finding gold dust.

We currently have a good one but she has a tendency to get carried away chatting and her concentration lapses.

I hate going into a salon. I find them stressful. I have always had folk trying to give me “big” poofed up hair. I like my hair just blow dried straight with no product. Nothing fancy.

"How difficult is it for you to find a good one?

In my experience they start out great but gradually begin to do what they think rather than what you ask for. I know and understand what suits my hair and I'm well aware that having it cut like a certain celebrity won't make me look like them. However they all seem to want to cut it shorter by stealth.

Have a chat with the lady in

Nails Ore Tan Ore village."

"It’s a nightmare..

Mobile hairdressers can sometimes get stuck in their ways a bit can't they.

I get the big hair blow dry too "

It's so interesting. Hairdressers want to straighten my hair.

Get away from me with that damn thing!

I think (don't shoot me I don't believe this) there's a "rule" that women over a certain age shouldn't have hair past their shoulders.

I think there are reasons for that belief, but that doesn't mean it applies to everyone or that you shouldn't do what you want with your own hair. I'd be pretty upset if someone tried to tell me what I needed to do with my hair (and I've had everything from a pixie cut through to I don't even want to know what kind of bloody surcharge for long hair I'd have now)

There is that rule but I have no idea why because until the 1920s almost every woman had long hair. Probably so it's easier to wash when you're in the nursing home

My hairs long, it'll stay long until I want it short. Nobody's telling Goldie Hawn to get a bob

I suspect it's more thinner hair is harder to look good long - but not all women's hair thins.

When one is really old I can see a case for shorter hair, because self care becomes more difficult. But (age is subjective, I'm sure some people think I'm really old) you're decades away from what I mean by "really old".

It's true thinner hair is better short generally.

I do find that my arms ache a bit when I'm washing my hair and a lot when I'm blow drying it.

A lot of older women still have a weekly wash and blow at the salon. If I could afford it I'd do that when I get really old.

I'm not sensitive about my age but I understand why people feel they need to be careful about mentioning it because lots are

Last time I used a hairdresser was several years ago - pretty sure she was using sharpened flints and freshly harvested pterosaur teeth and butchered my hair

Been letting it grow lately but it's that curly its a nightmare to keep in some semblance of tidy

Do you know I honestly thought the hairdressers who still used the freshly harvested pterosaur tooth method had long since stopped working. .

Thanks for that it made me smile.

Keep growing it, it'll come right in the end and next time ask for the pterodactyl bill soaked in vinegar method. Works wonders according to a tik Tok influencer

I think the 1920s thing was the whole feminity thing, nothing to do with practicality. If men could cut their hair, so could women. Flappers went for short hair to screw up gender norms. That's it, really.

"A certain colourful friend of mine threatens me with the clippers.

That's an amazing coincidence! I have a certain swinging friend who has hair all the way down to her bum, who asked me to style it for her. She chickened out though when I got out the electric clippers and asked whether she wanted them set at number 4 or number 2...

Wirral.

Oh, I feel your pain Mrs NC!

For years I couldn't find a stylist I liked or could afford. But about 10 yrs ago I was introduced to my current one. Bloody lifesaver!

She has a little salon in her house extension & happily cuts & blows my hair (no need for washing!) Every month for £20. Tip included!

My hair is pretty short (now)and fine and whenever I wanted to change it, she gives me honest advice.

I know you don't want shorter hair, but the plus for me is that I don't need to pay for colour - a box dye job one a month does the trick. X

During lockdown Mr N would do my roots for me and I reckon he could have a bash at highlights. I began to wonder earlier if I could trim it up myself. £20 is a really good price, you're lucky
