I’ve been scammed… :-(

Dubai & Nottingham

Just bought three items of clothing in the Levis store, approx £220, haggled a discount down to £170.

While she’s processing my payment she just puts a big box on the counter next to me and says nothing doesn’t even look at me. It’s a good move actually.

It’s full of these Levis ‘patches’, little metal badges. I start excitedly looking through the box, Look at her for some kind of explanation and she just says ‘take three’, And then turns away and carries on processing my payment. She’s clearly done this move before and it works.

They are in little bags there is no price on them. So I take three assuming they are free gifts one per item bought , she says nothing.

I get home and am uploading my receipt for points and see she’s charged me 49 dirhams each for them, about £30 total.

Sneaky cow.

I found the global CEO on LinkedIn I’m about to write to her but wondering If it would be better to go back in and try and get something for free worth much more than £30, I could say I might tell the CEO & threaten to share my story on Tik-Tok with photograph of the store and a video of the receipt and my unhappy face. I’ve already script the TikTok video and I’m quite excited. I’m not gonna let her refund me….

What would you do?

I’m just surprised you were able to haggle them down to £170, I didn’t think they’d be able to budge on prices. It’s something I’d expect from the bloke selling fake Ray-Bans and Gucci handbags in Turkey.

I’d laugh it off - you haggled the price down and then you got done - sounds like it’s equal now.

You’d have paid £220 for the items - you spent less but still want to moan. Seems excessive to locate a manager to complain about some items you got for less than advertised!

Retail managers can discount in so many ways, often items have been a lower price before and gone back up. They are usually cheaper online , they can do buy 2 get one free as well. If pay full price they are ripping you off

Absolutely. Some perspective might be useful.

Maybe go to the shop and moan … or is it easier to just take a pop at someone online?

Depends what OP wants … a solution, or some attention

Pretty sure all items must have a price on or displayed it for it to be charged to you.

Example. If a store incorrectly prices an item they must sell it to you at that price.

If she offered you the pins, and no price was shown in the box or tag on the pin. Then your right to think they were a gift from the store.

A retail person can clear this up if I'm a little off, but thats the jist.

Return to shop, return badges, explain store manager reason and under handed action from assistant.

If not resolved customer complaints. . Make noise!!!

This is very true. But on this aspect consumer law and you are pretty much aligns with consumer protection act of the UK in that sales should be transparent and price it should be displayed and made available at the point of sale.

You are correct on the consumer rights, I know them well in several geographies. UK still after Brexit …. , Europe, UAE are all aligned. USA will fuck you over as sales are based on Caveat emptor (buyer beware, Merchant will fuck you). I don’t really want a refund though.

Go to the store. Sort it out with the store manager. If that doesn’t work, escalate. Try the country head.

The whole TikTok idea of trying to engage with the ceo smacks of attention-seeking.

Hi Michelle

I wanted to bring to your attention the Levi’s ‘badge scam’ as it’s known. It happened to me today in one your stores in Dubai Mall.

These badges do not contain price information and it wasn’t disclosed at point-of-sale. I was simply asked to ‘take 3’ this is both in breach of UAE consumer law and unethical.

I thought I would message you direct as Levi’s holds the value of ‘we’ve always stood up for what is right’ & believe you would want to know about this, because it is not right.

I don’t need a refund or anything but I might consider a tik-tok video , maybe it would go viral…..

Under UK contract law no contract is formed until money is exchanged. Therefore retailers can change the price and shoppers can refuse to pay the shelf price at point of sale. Either party can refuse to contract to buy or sell.

I guess one could argue that since he paid up at the point of sale he agreed to the contract but this didn't happen in the UK and I reckon any decent retailer wouldn't be interested in arguing about £30.

OP - minor question: when you paid, why did you not question the final price? Given you had explicitly haggled it to £170 then willingly handing over anything other than that seems odd. Did you not look at the card terminal or see how much cash you were actually counting out?

Tbh mate, Dubai can be quite tricky. You could try yr idea, but the big designer stores really dont care much for keeping the customer happy. Unless you're spending millions,in their store, they won't give you the time of day. Yr idea might work in one of the back street shops, where they've got more to lose.

Shanghai Airport has a famous duty free scam where they put a small "gift" in your bag with your purchase by then get stopped at security (main airport not the shops) and when they search the bag they ask for proof or purchase which isn't in the receipt.

They don't let you go back and speak with the shop just give you a speil about shoplifting and fines. If you want to contest it you have to accept transfer to the local police station and get it sorted out, where it will mysteriously sorted out as an error and you will be free to leave. You will however most likely have missed your flight, been charged to remove your luggage from the flight etc etc....

Or you can pay the fixed penalty notice at the airport to the security and then be on your way hopefully not too late.

I was warned about this and told either don't but anything or insist on checking the bag before they seal it and always refuse anything free.

"Pretty sure all items must have a price on or displayed it for it to be charged to you.

You are correct on the consumer rights, I know them well in several geographies. UK still after Brexit …. , Europe, UAE are all aligned. USA will fuck you over as sales are based on Caveat emptor (buyer beware, Merchant will fuck you). I don’t really want a refund though.

You don’t want a refund? So you don’t want a solution.

Correct. I’ll take something better "

You don’t want a solution, you want something better? What’s that then?

"I wrote her , let’s see what happens…..

Your Ex Loyal Customer, Bunty "

The first rule when it comes to making a complaint is to request a desired outcome. Eg a refund or a review of policy. You have done neither, closed off the possibility of a refund, and dangled the pretty lame threat of a TikTok video, with the delusional assessment that it might go viral. Not sure you have thought this through.

All true, but he has stated clearly that he doesn’t want a refund.

He hasn’t said what he wants, apart from fantasising about TikTok fame.

"OP - minor question: when you paid, why did you not question the final price? Given you had explicitly haggled it to £170 then willingly handing over anything other than that seems odd. Did you not look at the card terminal or see how much cash you were actually counting out?"

True. The account of what happened doesn’t really stack up.

Clearly wasn’t paying attention at the till, which is daft in dubai. I was once presented with a restaurant bill in dubai that was 100 times larger than it should have been. Sharp practice is common practice in dubai. Pay attention.

"Seems like some sort of joke. Not sure. Anyway cool story. If it's the actual Levi's shop then weird. If not weird. God help the world, Dubai is the biggest poo hole I have ever been to. It's what happens when you mix new rich and idiots. It's like living in a weird nightmare combined with a never ending building site. Oman, parts of turkey, Egypt are lovely for the Arabian architecture and feel, Dubai is a goldplate mcchav tastic emiraty state sponsored nightmare "

A harsh but fair assessment. I gave up going there a long time ago, used to visit friends there.

Overpriced, invented self-appointed terms like “7 star”, and rip-offs are commonplace. And criminality on an epic scale … they had a vast right hand drive car market and the Sunday times did an expose, showing that every single car there had been nicked in Japan … shiploads of nicked cars were being brought in and sold cheaply.

Below the bling, it’s pretty grubby.

"Just bought three items of clothing in the Levis store, approx £220, haggled a discount down to £170.

"

Exactly. Give the store an opportunity to clear up any misunderstanding.

But OP has clearly stated that he doesn’t want a solution, doesn’t want a refund, snd 30 quid isn’t worth going back to the store for. He just wants attention and thinks he is about to become a TikTok sensation.

I managed to stick them on my tits in packet using double sided tape, it’s quite arousing actually might nip out and get some more (tape not badges). At least this way I still have the option of returning them in the original packaging for a full refund without affecting my statutory rights. Even though I’m not going to.

Why on earth bother with tiktoc. Fab is the obvious target audience. As we all know, there is a massive surplus of blokes on here and their boycotting of Levi's will doubtless make a huge dent in the company's profits.

I don’t think they’d be interested, they have far more on their plate.

If you’re insistent on taking it further then the store or regional manager will be more likely ti take action.

Indeed. I saw this thread when it was 4 post long. The unsatisfying story arc here.. op told to get a refund or get on with life. Continues to complain and be dissapointed with responses.

Also fails to show mystical RIP off badge only a 1 star revies for the story "one time in the Jean's shop"from me. : Protagonist fails to make progress to a conclusive outcome and no personal growth, likely not to buy you drink in the bar.
