Catapult Cruelty

An RSPCA man says that catapult cruelty is on the rise and reports claim that 500 people, some of primary school age, post videos of their kills and suffering on Whatsapp in private groups. A swan sanctuary has over 20 birds in its care recovering from catapult injuries. What should be done here? It's all over the news

We have a spateof it around here, ducks in our local pond were attacked, cars have had their windows smashed and property has been damaged. Everyone knows who the youths are but the police can't do anything unless they are actually seem committing a crime. It's far to easy to buy these things and one day it won't just be our poor wildlife that'll be killed.

This used to be common and normalised, as can be seen through older kids comics etc. Even when I was growing up there was open conversation, encouraged by grown-ups who would reminisce about using pellet guns etc.

Doesn't make it right - it's great that we've progressed as a society - but I can't help but feel like this is another excuse for old people to hold younger generations to standards they couldn't jump to reach, to justify the scorched earth they are leaving behind them as we close every library and social club that would keep them out of trouble.

Our society has been left to rot by our elders, who now bay for police to arrest our kids.

Alarmingly - my vet mentioned that it’s been happening to a lot of outdoor cats at the moment too! I thought this was an 80s thing

I remember reading the Beano and I had a catapult. I never sought to kill wildlife with it though and then brag about it.

(Just shot stuff at my brother, but he totally deserved it!)

I actually get really sad when I hear about cruelty to any animals.

They're just living their best lives and us humans have to interfere with that.

I was out running on Monday and saw deer, rabbits, a fox, a cheeky wee black cat and loads of dogs and it totally put me in a goof mood.

What else can be attributed to closed libraries? Tom does wonder why two primary age kids trying to return their Enid Blyton's to the library to find it closed would then decide to hunt swans with catapults tho. Police should throw the book at them

It’s all very nuanced isn’t it… we can blame society, the powers that be AND / or the parents…

Some people are also just twats though.

It will be water off a duck's back for some, whilst others are bound to go quackers over it and fly off the handle

Black widow catapults found in every gift shop in Scarborough during the hot summers on the 80’s, tried to hunt wild rabbits with them, couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo I was that bad !

Unfortunately it's in our DNA from the time man evolved he had to hunt and kill to survive but we have not evolved quite enough yet

How does everybody know who the youths are? I imagine there's lots of good gueses, but no real knowledge there.

On a lighter note, when I was a kid, we used our catapults to fire blackberries at random people, house windows and passing buses. Fun at the time but I can now see why they were a tad annoyed.

Trust me, a lot of people know who they are including me, I've seen them outside my house and in our local park where they actually fired at me and my dog. Despite me ringing the police nothing happened. No guessing required.

How come all the people who know who they are aren’t giving statements to the police?

If you KNOW rather than suspect, tell the police. If they refuse to act, get your MP to contact the Chief Constable.

It's sickening any animal(s) having to burden yet more cruelty from us human beings, these kinda of people carrying out these heinous crimes, they're simply not right in the head and need psychiatric treatment.

To teach these culprits a lesson, I'd simply leave them in the the world's largest tropical rainforest which is equally beautiful and dangerous around every corner, with malaises from malaria to yellow fever and unfamiliar insect bites. It is full of rodents and wild animals lurking around, like various types of snakes, venomous spiders, aggressive ants, leeches, and other parasites.

Teach them a lesson...

Sounds like it’s full of some right dangerous buggers…you’d need a catapult for protection!
