I know this is the second thread already and it's only 20 mins into the day but I wanted to speak on this without potentially "being too serious" on someone else's thread.

What does it mean to you, is it important, is it just another day?

Do you think it's needed?

For me, it's important because almost daily the world tries to tell women we are not enough or we are too much in some or many ways.

We are force fed images, quotes, stories, adverts and advice telling us to change in some way (often for the purposes of love or success) and it gets dressed up as inspiration or "help". When in actual fact it's just nonsense, often playing on insecurities.

Many of us sadly already feel at times that we are not enough or too much, we don't need the drivel to perpetuate those feelings further.

We get compared to each other all the time, we get slated for not conforming and equally we get told we are weak if we do.

Women supporting women is wonderful but actually sometimes women tear each other down harder than anyone else could. This will always make me so sad.

Most days we can not do right for doing wrong in someone's eyes.

And often, still we get overlooked, judged, or our professional decisions questioned just because we aren't men.

We have come along way but still not far enough.

For me today is about celebration and hopefully some solidarity. Let's remember how brave, strong and awesome we are, even if we don't always see it or believe it ourselves.

Let's remember to cheer each other on and be thankful for the wonderful women in our lives.

IWD to me, a man, is a day of learning mostly. Listening to the experiences of all women and learning more about what is needed to be done (beyond Britain) and also about wonderful women past and present whose stories aren’t told or uplifted on a day to day.

I think it is also a day that allows us to reflect on how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.

IWD for me is about celebrating women. And learning. And I wonder how my feelings and things I do on the day will change over the years as my daughter grows up. But she’s too young to understand it currently.

Equal pay, equal opportunities then yes..

But things like "positive discrimination" and "man bashing" in general isn't going to help.. yes individual women would do that, as theirs all sorts of women good and bad..

Sorry to wade in, however tonight I watched the Sarah Everade doc on BBC.

I have to say as a guy I have never had to face some of the issues raised/said by the woman.

I watch a lot of real life crime docs, i get really flicked off with men. I am one but it fucks me off how some feel the way they do.

I have never felt entitled, I have never felt she’s asking for it and all the other shite I’ve heard over the years.

I am not racist, homophobic , sexist or an other negative put about these days. I am 50 plus years old, I was raised to be respectful of others no matter who or what they are.

I am no angel, at times I’ve not been a nice person (mainly when I was a lot younger) some might have said I’ve been a down right horrible cunt. However I have never and never ever would I force myself on anyone. I would never f el entitled. Quite the opposite it’s a privilege to have a lady share themselves.

What is the issue?

Some are just down right evil. No matter what they feel entitled that’s 1% at most 2%.

The rest are a result of upbringing pure and simple. Tell a cild that it’s wrong they believe it forever.

Tell them black/brown none white none Christian, gay is wrong then guess what it stays.

I am at the point I give up

There is already a charity specifically aimed at educating /creating positive behaviour in boys and positive attitudes towards women. i forget its name but they work with young age groups

Without trying to upset you, do you really feel targeted this way when the media or people say things? The same things happen towards men too.

I think the day's there to highlight women's suffrage. I remind myself of the struggles come before, and to check in with myself and reflect against any unc0nscious bias.

Sometimes it makes me feel sad that it even exists iygwim.

For me and my workplace in general it's a day of focus on the issues women encounter in the workplace or to inspire us.

Some of the work done for equality and diversity in my workplace, was brought about due to the challenges that faced women. But they have also benefitted men. E.g. women are less likely to apply for promotion Vs men. Therefore, promotion workshops were introduced, the number of women applying has increased considerably, but there's also been an increase in men also. It's now nearly 50/50 which is fantastic.

Think far too many people try and see this kind of work as for only women and that it may be male bashing, and ignore the benefits for everyone. Is it perfect no, but surely trying to do something is better than doing nothing.

IWD is here to globally challenge gender inequality. Women have been and still are discriminated against. Gender roles are so deeply entrenched in society that it will take a long time to overcome, if ever. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try, quite the opposite!

IWD is about levelling the playing field, celebrating the successes for gender equality and striving for more.

I have an 18 month old and honestly becoming a mum (my phone actually autocorrected mum to nun and it couldn't be more fitting

) I have really seen how society's views differ between men and women. My ex walked out when we found out I was pregnant after several years together.

Yet I was the one being dealt the awkward questions, the eye roll for being a single mum on the bus with a pram on her phone (sorting appointments), the whispers whenever my daughter cried in public "she can't cope with her baby".

Actually, Im stronger than you think. Ive raised a loving, funny little girl whilst processing a break up with the person I thought I'd grow old with. I've spent everyday making sure she didn't feel that there was something missing. I pour my whole self into my daughter whereas her donor is living his best life with his friends but members of MY family still support him.

Sorry I got a little ranty but my point is I know it has improved significantly but a lot more needs to be done.

So disappointed that no one has asked why there isn’t an International Men’s Day, so I could say it was November 19th

For the record IWD has far more importance to me than IMD. As a father of two boys I think it is really important that they are raised with attitudes and in a society massively different to the one I was.

I worry when I hear them put down their Mum because I know her new fella is a bit of a misogynist. I stop them, correct them, ask where that opinion came from.

What does IWD mean to me? A chance to celebrate the pioneers and the unsung heroes. A chance to discuss levelling the playing field, a chance to discuss how women feel, a chance to listen, learn and improve.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings. This morning I've received a bunch of emails from companies with offers on underwear, spa treatments and afternoon tea.

Fuck. Right. Off.

I don't feel like "yay women! You rock!" is doing anything for anyone at this point. I'd rather it was used to highlight the systemic inequities baked into our world. But that sells less fancy underwear.

My number one wish for International Women's Day is that everyone reads Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez. It blew my mind. As Mr said when we were discussing the need for women to be provided with more toilets than men, due to us taking on average more than twice as long then men for a myriad of reasons, "Why don't people just make more toilets for women, then?" Why don't we, indeed?

Kinda summed the whole thing up for me.

International mens day doesn't mean anything to me and almost feels like an afterthought.

I'm not going to look at when differently or see them as any more equal than I already do just because a particular day has a label.

In the same way I'm not going to buy flowers and chocolate on valentine's day because the media tells me I should.

I think IWD is starting to become a force for the better. If I reflect ony work, earlier days seemed to be focused on the "headline" stuff and lacked real insight. The pay gap is a symptom of "something" but it's more complex than was made out. And it creates unhelpful division in my view.

Now it's focussing more on things where there are differences we need to reflect on. The menopause jumps out to me as an obvious one.

As a fella, I want to be educated to help allow empathy and to allow autonomy to decide how I will use that information. That moves the focus away from "all men", patriarchy and stuff. I have limited ability to influence that. I can change my own behaviours and reflect on my own view of the world.

It's relief in some ways - that reactionaries are just having a tantrum for no reason, finding something to be angry about.

This truly is an international day for raising awareness and campaigning.

I am delighted that so many men and women in our country feel it does not affect them; it is not the case however in lots of countries around the world - and we can all do something to recognise that.

It extends far more than equal pay rights, it encourages people to challenge oppression, sl@very, female genital mutilation and lots of other barbaric and inhumane actions against women that thankfully we don't have to face.

To trivialise it alongside other token appreciation days misses the point.

It might only be for a day, and yet if it raises some awareness and creates some change for a better world than I'm wholly behind it.

The only thing that affects me personally is nipple freedom. I would never wear nipple covers out of principle and have campaigned against the sale of this lunacy.

It’s important to me having 3 daughters and for a long time working in Africa seeing pretty brutal sexism, misogyny and inequality for women, I want my kids and colleagues to reach their potential without having to compromise their values.

It might be old fashioned but I think it’s important to also to celebrate women.

If we can celebrate who we are via PRIDE or a religious festival then we can celebrate the awesomeness of who women are too

Recognition of difference and individualism is important. It’s great to have days to highlight and remind us of those before us and to recognise and acknowledge the brilliance of those around us. The same as I love world book day and world mental health day

Means i'm missing my mum like hell today and sad i never evr got the chance to see her one last time and say goodbye to her ( Mr4 here) but been lucky as been surrounded growing up with really great women and strong women and who were mostly were way ahead of their time ( My Gran got sacked for trying to organise a union where she worked for better pay and conditions) and just wish women wouldn't take their hard fought for rights for granted and sad to see some it being rolled back especially in the USA ! XX

And this is important on a thread about International Women's Day why?

I'm sure I have unknown and unexplored biases. We all do.

The idea that you can only seem to imagine focusing on women in a way that involves fighting and putting men down might indicate your own biases.

International Men's Day is in November. It brings up a number of interesting and important topics that don't get brought up in the mainstream. The theme in the UK last year was about the wellbeing of men and boys, which I fully support.

Strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.

International women’s Day in big international companies is a big deal, And if they have offices in Africa it’s a massive event. It’s raising awareness of gender inequality and changing attitudes and culture towards women creating opportunities for women to progress into leadership that wasn’t possible before.

I’ve been in a couple of companies that have launched women in leadership or women’s mentoring initiatives for International women’s day and I’ve seen my own mentees progress.

It achieves a lot

I wish I could remember where I read it, but I saw some stuff last year about the virtues of these kinds of events and so-called virtue-signalling, that they give people a way to know who they can trust, who might support them, etc. (The reverse is also true, which is useful if you might be at risk, and hilarious to point and laugh if you're not)

Days like these are also a rallying call for those who need our help. The fact that you or I might not need the help doesn't negate the need for the help. (And the same is true for men, but come back in November or at least go to a different thread for that)

I work for a huge company, in a male dominated industry... IWD is really important as we try to win hearts +minds of teachers +parents who are heavily influential when students choose their GCSEs

We've had global events today, many of them interacting with local school children - its not at all about patronising female coleagues and doing something pink..... Maybe some of you need to goggle. The theme this year is: inclusion

Well it's not common sense to me. You may be TV but you don't speak for all Trans Women.

I was a member of a trade union's National Women's Committee and while I was welcomed by most of the committee, there was one exception.

A lesbian was making a bid for next year's chair of the committee, and one woman objected. In principal because she was a lesbian, she should be on the LGBTQ + National Committee and not the Woman's.

So to her, the Women's Committee should only be made up of Hetrosexual, Cis, White, Abled Bodied Women. Because there are other Committees these "other" women can join and she can't.

So the outgoing chair made the whole committee sit through a training on intersectionality.

Sadly, IWD is very important in my opinion.

In many countries women are still second class citizens expected or allowed to only sray home and produce children.

In the USA womens rights to make decisions about their own bodies and reproductive rights are being eroded.

In the UK and other Western countries there's still significant gender bias in STEM subjects abd careers.

Not to mention that inappropriate sexual touching is still rife and women tend not to feel safe out after dark.

It's not about man bashing. Most men are decent human beings. It's about improving women's lives and opportunities.
