We sold our old rental place in Biggin Hill (Kent) in late 2011, Three double bedrooms and were getting £1050 a month.

The new owner is now getting £1390 a month for it, without having spent a single penny on it since.....

I pay less rent for a flat in Hertfordshire than I paid as a lodger in London.

We would love to move back to London but would pretty much double our outgoings.

we're both londoners. we didn't choose gravesend it kinda chose us. we can afford to live here. we've got a two bed house garage and gardens for the same money or less than a one bed flat in Sidcup. I dread to think how much our first flat in norwood is now. it used to cost us thirteen quid a week

Our first flat in Orpington, cost us a massive £29,250 back in the day.....just looked it up on Zoopla, it went for £215,000 last September.

Funny thing is you only have to drive out as far as Dartford or Swanley and prices drop dramatically.

Same here, we both lived with our parents in London when we met then rented a 1 bed flat in Rotherhithe, the flat had sat empty for 7 years and we signed a 6 month contract, when it came to renewing it the owner (who was a family friend) doubled the rent. We stood it for around 2 months and then moved out to Essex. We now own a lovely 3 bed house and pay around 600 a month

The cost of affordable property is a real issue, London is a functioning city and as such needs all the associated jobs which make it work..

its not all 'the city & MP's'.

When folk are forced to travel for hours to start work as they cant afford to live within 50 to 60 mile, then put a shift in and then do the same journey home or crash on someones floor etc..

its a problem and does'nt look like being any better in the future..

I did see that when my son and his ex girlfriend were moving up there, we were in the estate agents and for the value of my house, I could buy 2 houses and a flat in Liverpool

One that includes having representative government in a democracy, with those representatives from all over the UK having to attend a parliament...without being able to stay overnight near that parliament?....

It's all very well moaning about things, but the situation with our MP's is little different to that of any other democratic country.....so let us into your plan to change it?

Our alarm goes off at 04:30 and when Tra is on the later shift we get home around 20:00

It's not about it being London-centric, but it is about the market dysfunction here as there aren't enough properties. With transport costs at the level that they are you can't shift the whole service sector, minimum wage, workforce out and expect that jobs will continue to be carried out without getting the result of the migrant workforce who live in severely overcrowded situations or in sheds having those jobs.

I looked in the estate agents in Bolton and if I sold my modest flat I could buy a house and not worry about working for 6-10 years.

We need to reintroduce fair rents and rental caps on landlords.

A studio flat on one of the better floors in the block where I used to live in Central London would cost around 250k to buy today.

The studio room of my flat measures 16ft x 12ft, the length included the depth of a bay window.

There is a separate bathroom and toilet, and there is a wardrobe opposite the bathroom.

The hotel rooms across the block are bigger than my flat.

However, I loved it, as it was very convenient for everything.

Shame that I had to let it go, as I needed to relocate down south due to lack of job opportunities for my line of work.

It will be very difficult of me to get back onto the property ladder in Central London now.

I'm sad as a 20something I live at home but when I did move to the east end I was shocked to see what my wages would get me. Fuck all. Work hard and for what a damp shit box room in a Trendy but high crime area. Sorry but as much as I no my friends are having there slice of independences I can't see me wages line someone else's pockets. Rant over.

Sadly what you are saying looks like it will only get worse rather than better. If more companies migrated to other cities throughout England it would do more for the country on a whole and less for individual landlords. Governmental bodies and linked institutions like the BBC would be far better located to the likes of Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester Liverpool, Sheffield Bristol etc. It won't happen sadly but longer term it may be a potential solution to some of this.

My kid sister worked in the stock exchange throughout the 80/90s.

Bought a nice 2 bed flat round near St Pauls in 81.

Sold it a couple of years ago 2007.

Retired at 40 years old to Australia on the profit from the flat.

Always some idiot willing to pay stupid £s for a flat with the right post code.

Most large projects in London, Olympics apart, are as a result of private investment.

So all the trains are travelling in one direction only?....have you not considered that it is exactly something like HS2 that will lead to regeneration in other towns and cities North of London?

No different in all major European cities though, you should see some of the property prices in central Milan, Madrid, Paris....

You will always have people with plenty of money willing to pay over the odds for certain postcodes....in many parts of the UK

We certainly can't dictate where private companies have their headquarters but it might be time to restart the policy of dispersing civil service/ MOD etc jobs to areas outwith London. Proper jobs this time, not just administration grades.

What civil service jobs? You can't shrink the state and create civil service jobs at the same time.

Relocation is what Prescott and Heseltine both tried to do to some extent. The growth in the north was fuelled by people having those jobs.

Heseltine getting the enterprise fund through the Budget will, I hope, see some economic stimulation across the country, if the LEPs know what they are doing.

Only if you can locate whole families. I'm not a civil servant and I live on my own but I can't really leave London. Well, I could but it would mean leaving my family, not being on hand for the care we have to give our parents and leaving all of it to my sister.

Moving the existing roles is one thing as they become vacant but that isn't a cost effective way of doing things.

It doesn't matter how many civil servant jobs you move out of the capital, and lets face it...lets not pretend that all of our civil servants work in London, far from it, in fact you could move ALL civil servants out to the regions and it wouldn't affect London property prices one iota....

Private companies are by far the biggest London employers....and why would they need to relocate?...why would they want to?
