"This reminds me of a visit to a petrol station in Luxor, not only was the forecourt a comunal meeting ground with every guy smoking, but the petrol was being dispensed by what looked like 8 year olds" YTS?

"I value my life and try to avoid dangerous things like people smoking in a petrol station in front of the pumps. Have I gone mad or has common sense gone out the window. Yes I did tell her to put her cigarette out. " That is as much the attendants fault in the booth. Petrol pumps don't automatically start pumping, it has to be authorised in the booth by a person, they should check for things like cigarettes before they push the button.

"oh and the mobile phones in use !! doh !! Why is this a bad idea?" theres a spark when they go off which can ignight petrol fumes apparently

"with you on this one .. oh and the mobile phones in use !! doh !! " There is no danger from mobile phones, in the good old days when we had cb radios, we fitted massive amplifiers and used to transmit while filling the tanks, the cb radios used to interfere with the pumps making the readers run slow hence a full tankful for the equivilant of £10. That's why they ban mobile phones.

"There was a television experiment not so long ago ... They filled a caravan with petrol canisters, soaked the benches etc. Popped in 25 mobile phones, and rang them all at once Not a thing happened " from somebody who has studied fire science, yes it is dangerous to use a mobile in a potentially explosive atmosphere.. they are not intrinsically safe! I have seen similar experiments and i knee that there would be no explosion because to much petrol was used.basically the atmosphere was to rich with petrol fumes! For combustion to occur you must have the right mixture of fuel, oxygen and heat!! That is why your gas hob will not always ignite if you turn the gas on full blast before pressing the ignition button - the atmosphere is too rich with fuel (gas) !!! Simples

Seen footage of people sliding out of the car seats and creating so much static they've created a spark and gone up in flames.

It's the interference the can cause with the pumps!

"with you on this one .. oh and the mobile phones in use !! doh !! " Mobby phones not so much as explosions were caused by first generation. But common sense seems to be a diminishing quality

"oh and the mobile phones in use !! doh !! Why is this a bad idea? theres a spark when they go off which can ignight petrol fumes apparently" No there an't, Mobile phones are water proof nowa days. and the exhaust pipes on the cars that drive in have 100s more higher heat levels.

"A cig isnt hot enough to ignite petrol vapour.. n the moblie phone thing about the phone sigal is a myth too no it is not a myth, read my post above.. " Your post refers to an experiment. Has there ever been a real life case? What happens if I am walking past a petrol station and my phone rings or I'm having a fag - what is the risk then?

"A cig isnt hot enough to ignite petrol vapour.. n the moblie phone thing about the phone sigal is a myth too no it is not a myth, read my post above.. " Do you have a link for the science reports/journals that corroborate this, they'd be an interesting read?

Simples " A garage forecourt is in the open air. You don't ever get an atmosphere rich enough in combustibles to create a hazard. Not without pouring a few gallons over the floor. The phone ban was merely over zealousness on the part of a health and safety "expert" who decided to err far too much on the side of caution. They need to do a fresh risk assessment of phone use. I always get a large static shock when I shut my car door, if I have been wearing certain shoes. Never blown any forecourts up yet.

"oh and the mobile phones in use !! doh !! Why is this a bad idea? theres a spark when they go off which can ignight petrol fumes apparently It's a myth! Nothing will happen if you use your mobile at a petrol station." I was getting petrol one day. I was inside the car and using my mobile phone. There was tanker delivering petrol. The driver went nuts when he saw me using my mobile phone. He said he would have to stop what he was doing. I am not saying you are wrong just what happened to me.

" That is as much the attendants fault in the booth. Petrol pumps don't automatically start pumping, it has to be authorised in the booth by a person, they should check for things like cigarettes before they push the button. " I blame the petrol companies. They should KNOW that people are going to smoke at pumps, and therefore not sell the stuff at all. Now we apparrently need a check list at petrol stations: do you smoke? Are you smoking now? Are you likely to smoke before you have finished dispensing petrol? Are you stupid or selfish enough to try to blame someone else if you don't know not to smoke while handling petrol? Would you like the attendant to hold your hand for you?
