Hi I got diagnosed with depression ages ago . But through therapy and other chatting therapy, I've been advised it seems more to be ADHD and autism. Is there anyone else who is going through this

Challenging to say the least. At least my diagnosis gave me a break from me thinking I was a failed neurotypical. I’m only a traumatised and depressed neurodivergent that has been misdiagnosed for all my life

I’ve suspected I’m adhd for years, and only recently thought “shit I’m asd”, I had like a moment of revelation where suddenly my understanding fell into place. I felt sad. But also relief. Realising neuro spicy doesn’t fix everything though

Glad you've got to the bottom of it OP and csn now hopefully start to understand things and why you are thinking or feeling certain ways.

My ex had ADHD and she didn't have a clue until she was 41, but then everything started to fall into place for her as the more she researched it the more she understood herself.

The support groups really helped too.

I went to my GP just 4 days ago, asking to be tested for ADHD/Autsim… she told me to Google some website she gave me, print out the questionnaire on the website, answer the questions then book another GO appointment and bring the sheet with me.

She then said after that, I could be on a waiting list for a VERY long time before anything else is done, let alone be prescribed the right medication to bring peace to my brain.

And apparently there’s a shortage of ADHD medication in this cpu try right now.

2024, and the country and NHS is on its fucking arse! They really don’t care.

There's is medication shortage world wide as more people are getting diagnosed thanks more awareness on social media.

I had even worse experience with my GP, so I decided to go privately. Yes, I did get my diagnosis, but meds don't work for my brain, so I'm back to square one. Living life on the verge of burn out

There’s not just a shortage of the medication, there’s a shortage of qualified staff to titrate people to the suitable dose, and then monitor them afterwards. ADHD medication is not stuff to mess about with.

My whole life I've felt like an outsider never fit in with social groupsor social situations, found it hard to make and keep friends,I find people infuriating particularly when they don't do stuff the way I want it done,I'm extremely sensitive to noise particularly loud noise and shouting,I get frustrated with mess and lack of organisation I love routine and organisation in things.

As a boy I really struggled at school I now know it's due to dyslexia and dyscalucia.

I have always blamed everyone else for everything.

I had an epiphany not so long ago and been really looking into everything I've mentioned and more, thinking deeply about the many thousands of situations that have left me feeling like I've been singled out.

I've come to the realisation that the one constant in all of this is ME not everyone else.

I suffer from manic depression and anxiety,an inferiority and superiority complex at the same time,OCD, and trichotillomania ( which brings me to tears)

I'm 56 this year and I really don't want to find out what is actually wrong,I don't like labels and I really don't think it's going to help.

But it would explain a hell of a lot to find out if I have been autistic my whole life.

Or if I'm just a person who can't get on with people.

Undiagnosed here too, I did the online AQ test after a counsellor asked if I had ever been tested and well, it said I should probably be tested, but I'm the same as you, having a confirmed diagnosis isn't going to change things really, I know my brain is a bit different and now it's been highlighted to me I'm starting to see things very differently like there is a reason why I'm like this and can do things to help me, like I can identify why I get cranky now, it's too much noise, someone trying to talk and I'm trying to cook all happening at once, now I can see that, I limit the stuff going on around me and I'm alot happier.

Anyone who thinks that they have a significant number of traits where it affects them should get an official diagnosis.

But the wait lists are obscene (3 years for autism and 4 for adhd in our area), so self diagnosis is a useful tool to see where you are and what you need to do to find a balance. If it turns out I'm not and I'm just a pain in the ass generally then at least I've learnt some coping mechanisms in the long run!

ADHD and Autism are completely different.

Many girls and women who are misdiagnosed as having ADD are in fact Autistic.

The tests for Autism in particular are unreliable as the criteria are skewed towards males.

Autism is a spectrum... there are different kinds of Autism.

Whereas ADHD/ADD are a little more straightforward- especially where therapy and medication is involved.

My daughter was misdiagnosed with ADD at age 6. 10 years later, different country and we're still not sure if she's Autistic or has ADD or is simply suffering from an anxiety disorder.

There's a severe shortage of qualified psychologists and psychotherapist - not just in the UK/Ireland but more so on the continent.

If you're lucky enough to have private insurance on top of whatever public scheme you're on, speak 3 major European languages (French, German, Spanish), you'll struggle finding someone as waiting lists are long.

As for the American Autism association... they are horrible.

It's a slog trying to find the right psychologist for the right patient: especially for neurodivergent patients because of the lack of adequate studies (especially on girls and women) and agreement on a standardized test.

Known for years I've had ADHD but managed to mask it for most of my life, however it got worse as I got older

Unfortunatly due to various mitigating circumstances in the last 18 months I suffered a complete shutdown that forced me to seek professional help.

I am going private through a Harley street clinic and been diagnosed with level 5 ADHD and mild autism.

I now have to have further appointments to discuss medication and treatment plan.

I have a long road ahead

Yeah I was diagnosed with depression in my younger years when in fact it's adhd and I was in burn out.

I've never went down the route of medication, and use supplements instead.

Exercise helps my brain alot.

Tere are also some great adhd friendly books out there for exercises to help improve executive functioning, focus, motivation etc. A good one for women is ADHD workbook for women by Sarah Davis and Linda Hill.

Also there is adhd coaches out there that can help with the above. Also Google to find your nearest adhd support group they can help with coaches, social groups and with any support you might need.

Another good book is add/adhd behaviour change resource kit with ready to use strategies and activities for helping children by Grad L Flick. It's good for teachers to understand more and for parents. Also counsellors or other mental health professionals.

The adhd chatter podcast is good to listen to if reading isn't your thing.

Also there is alot of adhd/autism/audhd pages on instagram to follow to relate to and feel less alone and get some tips that might help.
