Thought on this.

I have a 'friend'

Always intiates the conversation then disappears with no warning!

Leaves me baffled! Like what the hell you started the convo. Then comes back hours/days later and no explanation.

How do you take that!?!?!?

Liverpool

just the way they are, they’re probably really busy and struggle to keep conversations going without getting distracted by other things.

Thanks.

What ever you want to call it. To many different terms nowadays! Hard to keep up.

London (She/Her)

Sounds more like breadcrumbing than ghosting. Keeping you available to give them a little hit of ego boost

Calderdale innit

I used to speak to someone a bit like this, he'd chat and go quiet or leave the site, then reappear..

I just stopped responding to his messages, I can't be bothered with people who do this.

It's this. He could have ASD, or more likely the wife discovered his profile and he's laying low.

Wife or girlfriend sitting too close to comfortably continue the conversation.

Central

Decide on your rules, if you'd like and then discuss and negotiate. And potentially let them free

Exactly.

How good is this friend? Close? Or just an online friend?

Online friends tend to have many, and with the assumption, they are probably in conversations with a lot of people

Conwy

Or maybe he just gets bored easily.

Hard to say when there's not much context regarding the type of convo taking place.

I've found this quite common. Like others have said it could be a partner unaware they're on Fab suddenly interrupt them. Or could be work so maybe even a boss and/or customer. Who knows?

But for its worth I have a few "regulars" I chat on here with, some I've known for years, and they can disappear mid-conversion and then pop up again hours or even days later and just carry on where they left off. I guess I've got used to it.

I'm one of these friends,I message when I've time & in the frame of mind to chat - then the kids/house/work distractions mean I stop replying and don't realise for a few days.

Some of us are just useless at messages.
