I can get by on Arabic but try to improve it. I hate being in foreign countries and having to rely on English.

Leaning the language of love

I've tried to "study" a language in the classroom a couple of times in my life, without success.

A few years ago I moved abroad, to a country where I didn't speak a word. Within 6 months I could hold a basic conversation, a year or so later I was fairly fluent.

My tip is not to be scared of making stupid mistakes, make friends with people who don't speak English and enjoy the progress you make.

Which language are you trying to learn? If you're staying in this country, still find native speaking friends. There's a good chance they'll welcome the opportunity to share their language and culture.

Good luck

All over

I am ok with the ones I know but do try to learn a few things if I visit somewhere I don't speak the language. Always goes down well with the locals who very much appreciate the effort even if it is just a few words.

I've been learning French on and off since I was 11, I'm still not very good.

I have learned Japanese, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Russian. Nobody would accuse me of being proficient in any

I only remember that basic stuff that you learn in school. And my sentence structure is terrible with the ‘ge’ stuff and word order changes for tenses. If I successfully master Spanish though I’ll go back to it

I’ve been learning Spanish for about two years but only about a year that I’ve been consistently trying, making notes and practising. It’s going well. I can confidently order food, reserve a table, ask for directions, talk about me weekend, what I like etc. my reading is better than my speaking but I’m practising out loud more and hopefully I’ll become more confident to talk to friends that are fluent to practise with them too

Good effort .

I speak Welsh to a decent level and use it in work, socially etc, but I’m still learning it (doing exercises).

Absolutely love it - best thing I’ve done in years

I really admire people who are fluent in another language.

I see multi lingual hospitality staff when we're abroad being treated like second class citizens by some holiday makers and wonder if they'd be able to be as rude and obnoxious in three languages

Thank you for learning - it means a lot. So many people (and I’m including born and bred in Wales here) have a bad attitude to the language.

I hear what you say - there’s lots of little differences in different areas. I do think people focus on Welsh a bit too much for that, though. In a way, they are just dialects, same as any language.

Also, we tend to forget how difficult our first language is. I’ve taught English to people from abroad - it’s pretty bonkers in some respects .
