I recently set up a plus size ladies Pre loved clothing site, and the first customer was a newly out trans (M to f). It was styling from the beginning, she literally had no female clothes in her wardrobe and didn't know what to try, what would suit etc etc. It got me to thinking how did you all find out what worked for your body, what suited etc and also if there are any sort of forums etc I could have suggested to her?

I honestly brought loads and loads of clothes online (that had great return policies) and just did process if elimination.

Also, i used the cross dressing reddit page to see what other peoples styles were like and also ask questions.

I just looked for anything animal print.. anything with skulls on.. ridiculously bright colours..etc..I knew what look I wanted to go for....I wasn't looking to blend in and be passable that's for sure..

Wow!! .. it is soooo hard to hear that in this day and age there are still many .. probably the majority who are transphobic!

I have learned over the years by trial (and many of them), and error! as to what suits me .. and what my style is .. I prefer (well I try) to be as elegant a lady as I can, and shop accordingly.

My mum was into high fashion so I absorbed some of her knowledge growing up and it got me interested in the aesthetics of clothes and shapes. Sadly she passed before I came out but I credit her for the foundation of my styling tastes.

For me it was trial and error. It really did t start coming together until I became more open with who I was and started to be able to get feedback from others.

In the beginning, that feedback was in the form of fits of laughter because I’d gotten so horribly wrong ( looking back I whole heartedly agree with that too lol ).

One of the big problems many trans people have is that they develop their own style inside an echo chamber whereas most people growing up have a peer group of one kind or another that help them guide their decisions. Without that peer group all help can break loose and in my case it did

I've followed fashion for years. Always new my own style from an early age. Rock biker evil dominatrix.

Female clothing sizing is a bitch!!!

I measured myself, checked ladies sizing against my own. Cross referenced different brands, m&s, next etc.

Charity shops, ebay, vinted are a great starting point and of course fast fashion and their online returns is a life saver nowadays.

Primark or supermarkets for undies tights etc.

Everyone makes a crap purchase but once you get used to buying for your shape it becomes easier.

People watching while having a coffee helped me , some shop assistants were horrific in the early days , a few still are , eventually develop your own look , got to make it fun or whats the point .

I first started dressing in my mum and sisters clothes, so that was my only choice. Afterwards I was provided clothing to wear by the female half of a couple who were using me. That was generally rubber or leather, which I loved but is impractical for going out in.

Later in life I would just observe women who wore what I liked and then experiment. One notable failure was a pair of skintight shiny leggings, look great on women but accentuate the 'bulge.

A hurrah to you sweetie, you're an Angel and your post is so refreshingly supportive given transphobia is alive, kicking and why sooooo angry?!

Personally, I've always followed the collections (S/S, A/W), TV stylists like Gok Wan, proportions, shapes, colours, occasion / seasonal appropriate clothes.

My main source of inspiration is YouTube and items itself is Charity Shops.

Height is probably the most difficult. You yourself are a tall woman, so I'm sure you can share your insights.

On her request, I restyled a colleague once, she was thrilled. She was a tomboy lesbian who wore boy's clothes. I encouraged her to adopt a SportsMax style which she loved. It's just a case of finding a Fashion House that suited her image and she kept going back every new collection for ideas.

I encouraged her to use Tinted Moisturisers as she hated foundations but she found the light coverage of uneven skin tone made a big difference! Her confidence hit a new level.

I just dress in the style of someone who would be my ideal woman (the classic 80s rock chick or goth look) which nearly always happens to dress in black, seems a lot of TVs seem to go for the classic blonde bimbo look which often looks ridiculous on a mid 50s bloke with a beer belly (and yes I’m a mid 50s bloke with a beer belly but I don’t wear body con dresses)

Generally I find that our bodies are a different shape and so a CD or trans Lady needs to take this into account. Generally we are broader on top but not as big hipped so I find that while I could easily fit into a size 14 skirt I would not fit into a size 14 top and this needs to be taken into account especially if your buying dresses where you could slip it onto your waste no problem but it is way too tight for your upper body and shoulders. Also sometimes us gurls are trying to hide our arms so a nice long sleeve dress looks better and if it had sheer or lace sleeves even better. But every girl is different I guess glad to hear you were so supportive of that girl, I have had a few people baulk when I tried to buy clotes from them too so i know how that feels.

On this note. Buying dresses can be a bitch. I tend to stick to separates. Any dress I have I have bought for my top half and took to a tailor to fit. Other options are looking at material types. Elastine is a stretch fabric, against the likes of cottons or leather or some faux leathers whjch have no stretch. I buy slightly bigger for non stretch fabrics then get items tailored.
