I still don't mind if know what to make of it. It doesn't seem sustainable as a way of controlled aggression seems to be a cricket version of "we'll just score more than the opposition". There are times it works and looks breathtaking, but other times it makes the batsmen look silly as if they can't read the situation of the game and play accordingly.

It was brought in to hide their defensive shortcomings, but defensive play is an essential part of test cricket that they simply can't hide with hitting out.

What's the process though. Looks like removing all judgement and understanding of the 5 day game and just be aggressive at all times. Don't understand how anyone thinks we will win test matches by batting a total of 120 overs in two innings. Throwing wickets away needlessly isn't winning cricket... Nor fun to watch.

Haha OK. I mean congrats to India they played well but didn't really have to break a sweat to take our last 18 wickets... And that jaiswals some find isn't he?

He's looking absolutely brilliant, but it seems at the minute, we have talented batsmen rolling off the production line although none of them have really stamped their authority in the test team. Jaiswal looked excellent but I hope we can see him replicate his form in an away series.

For me it's about playing without fear..if you remember the 90's 80's there was so many players got dropped after 2 or 3 tests then left out for a year etc.

That said, it's about reading the game situation too.

Root in the last test didn't, nor did anyone after him.

Today he read it perfectly and batted with confidence, class and purpose without going off the rails.

So..just like he's batted for what? 12 years? Him and foakes steadied the ship by playing test cricket... What's in front of them. Be interesting to see what the Indians do on the same track

In the first 12 months I think a lot of them got too swept up with the hype.

As did most of the journos, commentators and in fairness most of us too.

Playing "normally" will still win games.

Agree with your later comment, let's see where we are after both teams batted

Yeah, but it's confidence that's crossed the line to arrogance where apart from Root, they now actually believe they're good international batsmen when really, the system implemented has done well to cover up the flaws in their technique.

The fact that most of our batsmen excuse their calamitous shot making with "that's the way we play" with no cognicence of game situation shows how they believe their own hype. All test teams have to do is let us get ourselves out. India didn't have to break into a sweat in any single session, with one exception. Our poor bowlers never get a rest as we never bat longer than 50 overs.

By demonstrating the results don't matter they're giving the message that the format doesn't matter.

I was trying to explain test cricket to a couple of Vietnam vets in florida a few years ago. The fact you could play for 5 days and draw blew their minds. It's still the most compelling and testing format of the game. Shame there doesn't seem to be much appreciation for it anymore.
