"I put a different birth date (but same year) and a different location for increased security purposes I'm actually 6 months younger than my fab age Even people I'm talking to with intent don't need to know where I live, only that I can travel or meet " I get the privacy rules, but you have listed your location as East Midlands and as a lot us us here know, the FAB map is incredibly vague, as East Midlands and East Anglia are wrongly lumped together. Yes, I know this is not your fault, but: How many miles are too close for you? 5, 10, 20? How many miles are too far for you. 40, 50, 60 You can count this in hours drive if it helps. Lets choose to places in FAB'S wrong map, Marple in Greater Manchester, and Manningtree in Essex. That is a 4h30min drive and is about 250 miles. Just putting "East Anglia not East Midlands" on a profile, would narrow the ranges down a bit, whilst keeping and respecting your security and safety. This benefits everybody by adding a level of practicality and that's all it boils down to. Wasted messages benefit no one.

Actually I'm laughing now, as i realised i do actually look at people's locations and discount them depending where they are - but if the majority of us are putting random locations on our profiles it's no wonder half the site never gets a meet

"Probably over half the women I've met at social events look quite different the impression in their profile. A decent amount of women I've met for coffee are older and look different than expected. Honestly who cares. If there's attraction there's attraction Filtered/Edited/Perfectly angled photos are far more misleading but then so is makeup, shape wear and so on. Conversely some people look better in person. It still comes down to attraction when you meet. I honestly don't believe anyone has any obligation to be honest about anything in an online profile on the public internet." My pics are all good angles and bad lighting but I try not to post anything that makes me look unrecognisable and I warn everyone that, even with the fat pics, I am way fatter than you would expect... I don't see the point u lying but I won't post a pic I dislike

Conversely some people look better in person. It still comes down to attraction when you meet. I honestly don't believe anyone has any obligation to be honest about anything in an online profile on the public internet." I agree with this. I've never been asked my age in a club or at a group social. Nor exactly where I live. Sometimes what I do for a living and my response will vary depending who's asking. Good friends know all the right answers. Random acquaintances can expect vague responses. If someone is not going to be a permanent or close part of my life at any given time then if my lack of details offends them then so be it. Interest and attraction to me is based on what I see and what I hear/read. If someone has fudged the details by a small margin I couldn't care less. Their privacy is to be respected. And you can always spot the ones that have knocked a decade off, added 6" downstairs or bullshitted about being an astronaut or professional lion tamer. Expecting 100% clarity from a total stranger on the internet is somewhat naieve and likely to lead to disappointment. People will share what they feel comfortable with at the time and more should they choose if things develop.

"My age is accurate, if I fall outside of filters so be it. I use to be a bit more vague on location (I used to use the closest large town rather than the actual name of the village), but that was more because a lot of people wouldn't have heard the village name so I never saw that as lying. I get that this isn't a dating site and some people have a need for anonymity, but it still isn't a good start to any kind of interaction to deliberately mislead..." Great answer.

"I assume those people who have fake locations never use “Who is nearby”? It’s a bit of a creepy feature to be fair. It is! Get the ick when I accidentally click it. I didn't realise you could switch your location off, I got msged by a man one day saying he had worked out we are really close by, then he sent me a load of pics of him standing next to street signs, last one I got said am I getting warmer? It was my street! I found out about turning your location off that day!" We had a photo of our car up with half the license plate in shot. Sammi was on the hood of the car in a sexy outfit. A guy messaged saying “I know you live on XXXXXX XXXXX and I know because I did a job there recently and recognise you car” Was a bit mental lol

I once had someone try to triangulate my location " I told my long distance friend which street his friend lives one, going by one photo he sent me and knowing his town. He said I should be a detective

"My age is correct never see the point in lying about it, as for my location I found it amusing during lockdown as an experiment and kept it Your location made me smile. Remind me never to use your bathroom though xx In the book its room 217. Kubrick changed it for the film. Yeah I know, it was changed so that the Timberline lodge didn't have a room people wouldn't stay in so it was changed to a none existing room number "

"I think I need to lie about my age, most think I'm lieing when I tell them the truth. As one suplier said to me, why didn't I stay in the forces and get the pension. He nearly fell over when I said I did plus another 9 years." For those wondering, the ageon profile is correct, yes, I know I don't look it.

"I feel stupid and hurt that I got feelings for man who just lied to me all time " I thought in swinging, you are not supposed to develop any feelings/attachment. It’s like a precursor of Tinder.

"There's a distinction that often isn't recognised. there is a difference between public lying and private lying. public lying is kind of okay in my book. it's like a brunette pretending to be a blonde, wearing a hat to cover a bald patch or flattering clothes to hide a belly. we all have a side of ourselves we're comfortable with the world seeing and many people have sides to themselves, usually involving relationships or insecurities of some kind, that they do not wish to be public about. lying about age and location is very much a part of how people want the world, or in this case, potential partners to see them. but then there's private lying and I think that's what you're struggling with the most with, OP. because it's one thing to lie to the homogeneous mass of anonymous Fab members on a profile. it's not honest but it is a separate thing to projecting a false version of yourself in a private conversation. whatever the reason or motivation is, it doesn't matter because at the end of the day lying to someone's face (or even their avatar) is deliberate, calculating deceit. it's hurtful. it's wrong and nine times out of ten, it's completely unnecessary. Mr W" Public lying = Marketing = Always read the small print
