"I'm just getting started in the world of Shibari, I really enjoy doing the more decorative stuff with fancy knots but my slight OCD is a bugger as everything has to be perfectly even and semetrical otherwise I have to retie it. I also quite enjoy being on the recieving end of someone else's rope work. It's just a shame finding people to rope with is so difficult." You need to join the Fetish Lifestyle website, there's literally rope events every weekend up and down the country with people who are always looking for riggers/bunnies. Most of them will welcome newbies to rope and help get you on your journey. We used to help pair up people at our event if they were attending alone, most events will help you with this if needed too as long as you give notice.

"We adore rope! We used to run a peer rope group in North Yorkshire, sadly we stopped with covid and life changes meant we couldn't restart but doesn't stop us throwing a few bits of string around when we get the chance. " there are two excellent rope groups in Sheffield, Steel City Rope and Sheffield Peer Rope

Sadly due to weekend family activities we can't even make those now a days either.

"Personally I take the view get out out there and give rope a try. I am hugely into rope bondage, from Western style, to Chinese style and Japanese style. I am also geeky about the history of Japanese rope bondage. When describing shibari, I take the definition that it is an erotic sadomasochistic activity. Yes the rope should be good looking but that is not the only point. It is about the process of tying rather than the end result. As someone said incorporate your mistakes into the tie. The goal is not merely restriction but communication. That being said there are different schools of shibari from the caressing style of Haruki Yukimara, to the suffering style of Naka Akira to plain brutal styles of Randa Mai or Kazami Ranki aka The notorious nawashi. In the west to make shibari more palatable, it has either been given a new age vibe, and marketed alongside meditative practices. I have a friend and we do meditative rope of being present in the moment but it is rope bondage and not shibari. The other side is its inclusion in porn but although I am a fan of the riggers from the Kink site (JP "The Pope' and Mat Williams) it is not connective rope. Personally I follow Yukimuran (RIP) style, which is more floor based and gentler and erotic. But I love Randa Mai's (RIP) work. He calls himself an S&M entertainer and not a rigger, but he had serious skills. For me the rope is an extension of your hands and it is not an excuse to grope your partner although some harnesses bring you into contact with breasts and genitals. To use a cliché, it is about "connection" and avoiding "bored bunny syndrome". Anyway I can go on about it. The only other point I would make is the modern view is that shibari is not an ancient art. Midori who wrote one of the first practice books on shibari has an interesting article called "The History and Myths of Japanese Bondage". Most people hold Seiu Ito (3 March 1882 in Tokyo – 28 January 1961) to be the main grandfather of shibari. The modern development took off post WW2 and culminating in the 1970s in shibari as we know it. But shibari has developed in leaps and bounds from there. Even in the last 14 years the practice of Shibari/rope bondage in London has changed. Have a look at Bob Bentley's film " The Pleasure of Rope Bondage" on his discovery of shibari/kinbaku in 2010. Now, there are more female and non binary riggers. Rope spaces are inclusive and positvely open to trans and gay people. There is still a struggle to get more POC people into shibari although there have been attempts. Rope bondage is not just about men tying women for sex. In Japan most shibari is performed by professionalfemale dominants tying clients. " Whilst I do like Naka's style for the connectivity, I think Kinoko has done a lot to some of the ties safer for the bunny, especially with the TK. I was planning to do a weekend workshop with Midori in Miami in September, but can't do it now because of child care issues, gutted

Every podcast I have heard her in, as an educator she sounds so sane and knowledgeable. Her book "Wild Side Sex' is good fun. I agree the one of the biggest changes has been the concentration on safety and education. I have two of Kinoko's teaching videos. Naka Style (semenawa) is too brutal for me. Although I am planning to have semenawa lessons once I get my suspensions up to speed.
