Are the original Levi's I used to buy in the 70s 501s? I haven't owned a pair for years and I want to get some but I just want straightforward jeans like the ones I paid £3:50 for .

I bought some recently, the denim is so thin you can feel the the slightest breeze through them. They are though the only ones at a reasonable price I could find that fitted well, even if they had a zip.

The 501s date back to the 1870's, but there were always several "models" available. The 501's are the "Premium" Jeans.

Unless you were buying skinnyfit, flares, boot-cut, etc..., your 1970's jeans were probably 501s

I wondered about the quality of the denim. It looks thin even in the adverts.

I might have to rethink this

Yes they are indeed 501,s and I strongly recommend that you buy them again because your arse will thank you.

Coming to London next month and I’m hoping that the Levi,s place is still in Camden market so I can buy Eve some.

Sadly disappointed with the last few pairs of 501s they just didn’t last… went on pockets and knees…. Found a decent pair in Next similar to 501s but lasted far better… went to buy more only to find they’ve been discontinued… the search continues!

The 501s seemed perfect for slim figured bodies. I'd almost certainly not suit them now, as I'm a little self conscious of my arse - I do like to work and flaunt it but it should be with the right gear

I'd probably find a Levi's store and try lots of the styles on, to see which were most flattering.

Ah ha, yes, they are still available but I seriously don't think you will get any for that price even in a charity shop!

One of my female friends tells me charity shops now have a wide range of jeans & quality & brands are good!

The cheapest jean you can get in Notts is in the £30 pound mark.

I have bought & £60-£80 pair of diesel ones that went on the knees in less than 6 months. The Enzo ones are in the £30-£40 pound mark. They are ok.

I like to buy button up jeans as there is more room in the crotch & they are tailored better for us guys as opposed to zip cos once yer trapped yer Percy Plant in them you don't want to get zips again...

I wear size 10 jeans but my shape might require a different cut nowadays.

I've been put off Levi's now though. I have jeans from Next and bought some from Tesco on someone's recommendation. I don't like stretch denim and I only like the really dark blue.

I'm too fussy aren't I

I bought some of the 501 150th versions recently. Shrink to fit and no, i didn't sit in the bath with them on.

Careful with the 502's - they are a slightly stretch fabric and i found quite thin compared to normal.

The best denim I’ve found, that’s thick and holds up ages are A. Golde, Pistola, and Frame. They are all the type you’ll buy a pair and not need to replace them for ages. The oldest pair I have is nearly ten years old and looks new still.

Unbranded, Nudie and Edwin do decent weights but I found it difficult finding the right style between each - that is if you could find sizes in stock. Slim fit would be more skinny fit, tapered seemed more straight cut, regular seemed loose cut. I gave up sending them back but their denim were nice with all three.

The 512's are a tapered leg and slightly more fitted. They're a really good fit around the bum & crotch too. Definitely worth trying on different styles if you can asbthe cut of a pair of jeans makes a hell of a difference on different bodies.

"Are the original Levi's I used to buy in the 70s 501s? I haven't owned a pair for years and I want to get some but I just want straightforward jeans like the ones I paid £3:50 for .

I only ever buy Levi's jeans.. You should go into a Levis's shop or outlet and tell them what you're looking for.. They're really helpful and you'll be surprised how good they are now. "

:whinging child voice:

But I don't want to. I want to find a pair, that fit perfectly in the doorstep.

"The 501s seemed perfect for slim figured bodies. I'd almost certainly not suit them now, as I'm a little self conscious of my arse - I do like to work and flaunt it but it should be with the right gear

I'd probably find a Levi's store and try lots of the styles on, to see which were most flattering.

I wear size 10 jeans but my shape might require a different cut nowadays.

I've been put off Levi's now though. I have jeans from Next and bought some from Tesco on someone's recommendation. I don't like stretch denim and I only like the really dark blue.

I'm too fussy aren't I "

Definitely not! We like what we do, for our own reasons. I've not worn Levis in ages as I just don't see them suiting me now. It's like finding gold, when you find a brand and style that works well for you. I've reduced my clothes purchasing, as I felt I was getting too much

"I paid £75 for a pair of Levis and they're too small.

I'm dieting into them

Ooo. What's the quality of the denim like? Is it quite heavy ?"

I'll dig them out later today and let you know.

Oldham or South Shore

Most high street denim, these days, are so thin you may as well just call them denim coloured trousers.

I’m a denim geek, so I only really buy Japanese denim, as I find that the weight of the denim is far superior to anything American. Brands like Pure Blue Japan, Iron Heart, Oni Denim, Samurai Jeans, will give you a weight of 19oz and up, so they will be very robust and hard wearing. They will also be unsanforised, so that shrink-to-fit that Levi’s used to have is still present.

I use the Rivet And Hide website.

So true, the weight of denim is key. Lee used to produce a pair of 16oz ÷ back in the day.

Ted Baker and Replay jeans have both stood the test of time!

501's were the best jeans money could buy back in the 70's-80's. The denim today is sub standard in comparison

Not that I know of. I'm going to follow up on some of the suggestions made on here but I'm rapidly going off the idea.

Well after seeing comments that 501's have buttons, I looked at mine and they're 511's, which might be why they have a zip. They're very lightweight anyway, so I have no clue about 501's

I was told by people in fashion industry / manufacturing that denim in general is way thinner now due to costs / ROI for companies

Just around the corner

I was a cheapskate in the 80s and used to wear cheaper 505s with an orange tab. Now that Levi’s have fully embraced the concept of ‘premium’ they don’t seem to make them.

Right! Going from the replies here I think 501s might not suit my hip to waist ratio nowadays. It seems also that the denim quality isn't like it used to be in terms of weight etc.

I'm going to look at some of the brands suggested and either go for one of those or give up on the idea and get a pair from Primark (i have had their jeans before and they're not bad).

.

.

.

PS I found a brand new pair of jeans that I put in the 'waiting to be altered' pile, along with two dresses and a blouse

"The 501s date back to the 1870's, but there were always several "models" available. The 501's are the "Premium" Jeans.

Unless you were buying skinnyfit, flares, boot-cut, etc..., your 1970's jeans were probably 501s

Cal

That's what I wanted to know. Thank you.

I wasn't wearing them in the 1870s though "

What were you wearing?

Yeah, 511 have a zip. I prefer the 511 to 501, they fit around the waist a bit better and are slim enough thru the leg.

Nudie Jeans are worth a look OP, slightly more expensive but top quality and lifetime free repairs.
