I guess we all have to stop and think what comments we make in life can have such an impact on someone...

Think how often you are on here. It's addictive right? Now imagine u are teenage kid, insecure, unsure of yourself and life, switch the pic off sure but in your head its still there

If I was a teenager these days I'd struggle. I hated the negative comments I got at school and i didn't get that many. Imagine that emailed across the Internet for all of your peers to see..... Instead of Chinese whispers at the back of your class to 20 kids its a million times worse

I know kids that have been bullied by a bombardment of text messages from a group of bullies. Truly horrible thing for a young mind to have to deal with

I've seen nasty comments very occasionally - I think sometimes done to deliberately be provocative by people who just don't know how to contribute to a debate

The odd comment slips through at times, but it doesn't happen on here in any sustained manner as is the case for the kids shown on the program. Totally different.

But all it takes is one. One person to ruin another's life through bullying. It doesn't take a million. Or even a few. Just one.

IRL doesn't have that off switch - or the audit trail that mean you can reach out and show someone and get help.

I don't want to take anything away from cyber-bullying - I've seen bulling from both perspectives and the devastation it causes.

sure but for many kids... they switch the keyboard off, their phones and hide on the way home to try and get that day over with....

until the next one

If it helps, on both occasions, their school took a massively proactive role in stamping it out and the two lads I know are now doing great. The best thing they did was ask for help

When you realise just how much of a teenager's life is spent online these days it's very difficult to tell them not to go online for a few hours. To them it is though something extremely important is happening and they'll miss it. My 15y/o daughter has had so many rows with her mum because she turns the internet off at 9pm but my daughter managed to wangle herself a new contract phone with it's own internet access which she piggy backs her Kindle onto and goes online that way. If her mum was to confiscate all her internet-enabled devices she's be walking out of her room with an armful of equipment each evening.

Faced with this sort of barrage of online communication, a parent is fighting a losing battle trying to ensure their kids have quality time offline as well as a safe experience online, and bullies operate where they know they can do it without adults watching over them every second of every day - and even if a parent is diligent and blocks online access for periods at a time, it's very difficult to intercept a malignant message sitting in your child's inbox waiting for them to log on again.

I've said it before that the internet as we know it today is comparable to the Wild West of the 1800s - it is lawless and the more vulnerable among us easily succumb to it. It needs to be policed effectively but that requires all of us who use it giving up some 'freedoms' to ensure everyone is safe.

Bullies are cowards...cyber bullies are bigger cowards, they dont even have to guts to face people when they are picking on them.

"Bullies are cowards...cyber bullies are bigger cowards, they dont even have to guts to face people when they are picking on them."

There are different degrees of online bullying though. There are the trolls who attack anyone regardless of whether they know them, and then there is the bullying that goes on as an extension of something that's happening offline - like in school for example. I think we need an online police force who have the power to block trolls and bullies from going online, and with fixed IP addresses that broadband gives us it's far easier to block someone's internet access than it was in the old dial up days.
