Starting writing a new book

I’m starting to write a new book and I’ve run into some problems

I don’t have a great relationship with my (paternal) family but im settled on a name for the main character that is the same of that of my aunt that, while it’s not as bad with her as it is with the others, I still have difficulties with

Do I just carry on with the name and pretend like it’s all a coincidence? I kinda have my heart settled on this name because it fits perfectly with the character but I don’t want my aunt to think it’s about her.

Unless you think it has the legs to be a best seller, I wouldn't worry about it too much at this stage. Just enjoy writing the book

I wrote a book several years ago and pulled names which worked at the time. It was around the 3rd draft where I changed some of the names and tweaked the story more.

Just go with it for now, explore your world and enjoy writing the book, you can always tweak it at a later date

I'd just keep going for now, and for a good while.

When everything is at that awkward third draft bit where you start pulling people in, that's when you wanna look back and say 'Is that dodgy?'

Because you know these dickheads on the page, they're gonna change on you without warning.

Can you put at the start of the book the disclaimer they have at the start of films, the, 'This is a work of fiction, any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead or actual events is purely coincidental.' (I had to google that! )

I put that at the start of my book that was just published and still somehow caused a family rift, oops!

i haven't had a best seller yet but they have been more popular than i expected - so go for it aim high.

When developing my characters i work on the back story to them even if i don't use it - choose a name that reflects the type of character they are based on that.

You can always use:

"All characters are purely fictional, any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental" etc etc good luck

Just keep going with the name for now if it fits the character, a new name might come to you as you go on, good luck with it!!

Change the name. Your family is going to think it's about them even if it's not which is problematic in itself (unless they identify with a good guy). Also you'll end up writing your aunt not an original character that shares some of you aunt's characteristics unless it's autobiography.
