Short term memory is exceptional, I get told that a lot (they just say memory but I know it’s short term), long term not so good - I can’t remember very well and certainly can’t year place things that have happened - like my mother can go “that year we went here, the next year we went to wherever”, I have no clue, I just remember glimpses or feelings of things.

Does it change as we get older? Will my long term improve and my short term diminish?

I’m the exact opposite, short term memory is atrocious, I’ve even taken to writing things down If I think it’s important I need to remember it, long term is really good, can remember with vivid detail things from years back. Not just isolated things but things in general.

It's.....complicated. I have auditory processing issues, so things I hear are easily forgotten (thanks autism!) However, my visual memory is excellent. As is my olfactory memory. Short term memory isn't fantastic, long term memory is patchy.

Mines very random, I can probably remember most arguments I've ever had and all the words from songs back in the 90's but I couldn't tell you what I had for tea last night or what I was supposed to put on my to do list for today.

Yes, feelings/how you feel about something can last far longer in our memories than details.

I know that memory reduces as we get older... I'm not sure if it kind of reverses so long term improves and short term doesn't. Why as people age (let's say 75+) do they recall childhood memories more readily though? I'm not sure.

I forget whole days, and wonder how I got through them.

I've forgotten how to spell, and all the maths I learned as a teenager.

I can't read a book and remember any of the characters names.

There are similarities with me in here, and i'm fairly certain is related to my autistic brain too. My short term memory isn't very good and my long term memory is patchy as well, but things I'm interested in seems to be a brainer. In terms of the visual and hearing processing, in the moment they are both very good but trying to remember information after isn't too bad but not great either. My brain processing in terms of socialising is somewhat slower than the usual brain processing neurotypical peeps.

My memory is quite good, despite spending much of my 20s shall we say... not living the best lifestyle.

I do sometimes struggle with names, particularly when I first meet people, takes a little while for them to sink in but not so with anything else, which I find odd.

Rubbish, definitely worse than in the past. I think the amount of time I spent alone over lockdown had an impact on low level ADHD and made it worse.

It's somewhat selective though. I can hyper-focus on things I like and am interested in, and remember intricate detail about them, but general things just disappear from my mind.

"What's your memory like?

Sooooooo I went to a psychologist about my memory, getting confused or muddled etc. They didn't know if it was as a result of my brain tumour or if I was/wasn't forgetful.

Anyway, what she found is that I've not been engaged (grimace). When I've found something a bit boring or whatever, my brain wasn't switching on. Unknowingly. When I was challenged or had a vested interest on something, I was very very good at remembering. As in I was on the 99.9 percentile. I was so relieved and chuffed when I heard this. I literally wasn't going senile as I was genuinely worried about that or really early signs of Alzheimer's etc.

However, the fatigue and concentration troubles did make a difference and I couldn't function ie drive myself home afterwards. So I can remember if it catches my interest but not for sustained periods of time, other wise I'm kaput.
