Pretty much everything is overpriced these days in my opinion.

I believe the worst offender to be the pharmaceutical industry. People rely on that industry for a decent quality of life.

What do you think are the most overpriced things

The development cost of a new drug entity from molecular discovery/design through to obtaining marketing authorisation for the drug to be made and sold is immense.

The drug companies have a relatively short time span of about 10 years before the patents on their new drugs start to expire, allowing generic copies to be made by other companies and sold at reduced prices.

Therefore, the drug companies will try and recoup as much of their investments as possible within the first few years after a new blockbuster drug is launched.

Whether it is justifiable to spend thousands of pounds on a new drug to extend the life of one person by cutting down spending on other important/vital healthcare services/products is another matter altogether.

When you are purchasing any medication that has been manufactured by any given pharmaceutical company you are not only paying for the production cost of that medication, you are paying for the research and development of that medication.

R&D in companies like Pfizer is multi billion and accounts for the majority of the running costs of their company, many drugs take years, even decades to develop and test.

That is what the NHS is paying for when it purchases medication....the whole package of that medication.

If they (the government) didn't get that income from fuel they would only get it from something else, if the government cut fuel taxes it wouldn't automatically equate to a cut in forecourt fuel prices as the fuel companies would then be left to earn more profit per litre sold.

If you are in any doubt check out Spanish road fuel prices, less government tax....but higher prices at the pumps.

Prescription prices are just a way of evening out the costs between those who need a few fairly inexpensive medications and those who need a lot of expensive ones.

As for 'free' prescriptions in Scotland. Yes, we don't pay over the counter in the pharmacy but we pay the price of free prescriptions (and free travel) in other ways.

That's OK if what you need has a generic eqivalent which you can buy over the counter at a lower price.

Many meds are prescription only medicines (POMs) and can only be sold at the standard prescription charge.

That's causing some issues in Scotland 'cos people are pestering GPs to prescribe stuff which they could easily buy over the counter.

I used to work in pharmacy you would be shocked how little drugs like antibiotics cost. Then there are some things that cost a hell of a lot more than out 7.65. Having said that I still begrudge paying lol

The oil companies make next to nothing from the fuel that is sold on forecourts, it is a by product of what they are drilling for and extracting.

The tax on fuel for every litre is close to £1 now hence why it is so cheap in some countries.

I agree that the government would get it some other way but you can no longer class fuel as a luxury in this day and age. Having your own car is no longer a Luxury but a necessity for most, who like farmers, get tax free deisel

The reason Gilette cost so much is probably (I know someone in the "gilette" industry shall we say) P&G spend more on the development of razor blade technology than NASA does on the space program and their lasers are some of the most advanced in the world.

Has to be fuel. The cost to the economy is staggering. Almost everything we buy has to be transported some how so everthing costs more as a result. Im not nieve enough to think prices would go down with a reduction in duty but it would help with the unequal cost of living versus income. And if the tax lost was put on income tax for instance im sure the economy would be better off.

Because that'd penalise people who are 'consumerist'. By all means pay £600 for a cellphone (as mentioned on another thread) but don't expect others to pay more PAYE just so you can have it a bit cheaper.

Insurance also isnt taxed as far as im aware. But you do have a point but most things we are taxed in most have bo choice in buying anyway. Those that buy luxury thinks will prob be earning more so paying more tax anyway. I agree its not perfect but surely better than the current way.

Non drivers use roads aswell.having thierry local shops stocked In the bus or walking on pavement or cycling.and your missing my point that they are paying indirectly anyway. I pay council tax and our local council just built a kids playground which i have and cant see ne ever using. But i can see its need for our society of which im a part so im happy to help pay for it. Roads and fuel benifit everyone so why shouldnt everyone pay for it
