Tablet recommendations

In Your Bush

I'm looking at buying a tablet (electronic not aspirin) and thought I would seek some recommendations from the forum members. I have an iPhone so not sure if I would get a benefit by going the iPad route, or if there are much better ones out there.

Invictus - this is a serious thread. I know its tough but Please try and refrain from corrupting it with plasma proton time shifting shit well at least till I get a good selection of tips and advice

Firstly you will get all sorts of crap from the ridiculous apple v android debate. Ignore the more hysterical ones from either side of the divide.

I can only comment on the I pad.

Biggest question is what do you want to do with it.

It doesn't run Microsoft office but there are apps which emulate it.

It won't run flash.

If you already have an iPhone then an iPad is effectively a larger version. It won't allow you to broadcast your camera on here but using the correct browser you can view them

I love it as its so easy to use with so many apps for free.

At work we have every single tablet on the market for testing and the iPad stands above them all for build quality and smoothness of operation. The only thing similar is the Blackberry Playbook which I believe has been discontinued now. Also the Kindle Fire HD is good!

I personally own an iPad 1 and an iPad mini and the iPad mini is a dream! The perfect size! I can read with one hand yayyyyy! So in short get an iPad mini NOW!

If you like the iPhone then ipad is the way to go

If you want something powerful and with a little more flexible then the asus transformer prime is worth a look

If you want to do anything you can on the pc and you got the money then a Microsoft surface pro is the one

Depends what you want to use it for. Playbooks are very nice but apps are limited unless you're happy with a bit of geeking about.

iPads are still unbeatable really in terms of apps, battery life, stability etc. and if you already have an iphone it's really just a question of big or mini.

I have an Android Tablet, an Acer Iconia A500, it's a year old now, so there are newer models available. My housemate has the Transformer version, came with a detachable keyboard. I like his.

I love the fact that it is really easy to use, and I can sync it with my phone and laptop easily, so I only need to put stuff in one diary, and they sync with each other. Don't think Ipad does that.

Battery life is great, I've dropped it twice and not broke the screen. Generally very happy with it.

Only problem I have with it, is my housemate used my laptop to google how far away the present he bought me for my b'day was, and the laptop sent my tablet a message confirming it, so spoiling the surprise!!

Ah ok another question. I know the iPad can't but do any tablets accept a memory stick for transferring files?

Guess I'm getting too fussy now and into laptop realms, but it would be nice to manage files and not just photos and songs

You could use dropbox which has apps on all of the platforms and will save you a whole load of hassle carrying aroun (or losing) usb sticks.

The cheaper ones don't but they should come with a lead with the relevant mini/micro plug at one end, and a USB socket at the other. I use it all the time for my 3G dongle.

The android nexus 7 and 10 is the main competitor to the ipad. Really good tablets easy to work with. I think the main choice is between these 3. Personally I like all 3 but the thing tht edged it for is tht I hate how Apple try to lock you down in terms of music etc. Hope that helped

I bought a nexus 7 just after Christmas, had had a cheep Chinese android tablet before that but it really was junk.

Was looking at a Samsung, as I love my s2 phone, but looking at the specs, the nexus made more sense.

Compared it to an iPad mini, was loads cheaper, a better display, faster with more storage and the added bonus of not being an apple!

You need to give bit more information Ryan.

1/do you need expandable memory for films, music etc?

2/What size are you looking for? Small as in 7 inches or round the 10 inch mark.

3/Budget, what is your max spend and your target spend.

4/Mobile internet, are you looking at a 3g tablet, does it have to use your current dongle if you have one?

That info should narrow choices down a lot.

Appled up and I need to be compatable. Pity flash player won't work though. I have a feeling it will be used for surfing the web, being on fab, playing games and using it as a sort of kindle for reading books oh and watching films. Fingerprints on the screen - I would spend all of my time cleaning the screen. I had to use an iPad at a conference last month and everyone was staring at me because I kept cleaning the screen. I hated it when they swapped them all around.

1) I'm not bothered about expandable memory as I wouldn't really use it for films

2) I would prefer a 10 incher

3) If it takes my fancy cost isn't a primary concern - within reason of course

4) ideally I would probably go for a 3G one, but I do have a MIFI dongle I could use

I think the best thing is to go out test driving.

Some good advice given on this thread though

Riddled with problems? Where did you get that one from? The RT out performs everything on the market, granted some imoan users are not happy as it will kill the ifad off over time. The surface pro has not been as popular but its not really a tablet you can compare to others as its essentially a laptop without a permanent keyboard.

If you have mifi connection then get a wifi only model it will save money and battery life.

If your not after expandable memory then the Nexus is a possibility as the 10 has a fantastic screen but then do you need that if you are not using moves on it.

Maybe the 10in Galaxy Note is the best option if buying now as it will have a decent resale value and you can have for now a machine with a good track record for reliability, its possible to get round the £300 mark or less and it will run the majority of things including flash. Its not the ultimate in any area but a very good all round performer.

Cheap and predictable shot with the "imoan users" as if people who use Apple products aren't allowed a say on anything else. I use Windows phone and was actually quite excited about Surface launching.

Firstly the memory saga was an embarrassment with the 64gb model shipping with 29gb of available storage. Yes there is a way round it, but that doesn't look good and involves some technical know how of the user.

I have used one and it froze a lot. The keyboard couldn't keep up with typing and it was quite awkward to use - not sensitive to the touch enough. There were also numerous reports of thetouch cover splitting and peeling wiin days. The App Store isn't up to scratch either compared to the iPad. Google any review from any (unbiased) tech website and you'll find it likely less than favourable.

If you seriously think the surface will kill off the iPad you're deluded - it's far too expensive and they haven't even been putting it in shops for people to see or play with. Your average consumer isn't going to take a punt on something so expensive that they can't walk into their local Currys and have a go of first.

That depends if you think quality is worth paying for, and in the tablet market I definitely think it is! I had a cheap android tablet before my iPad and they are worlds apart in quality and ease of use.

I get the £10 goody bag which was unlimited data but is now 1GB I think

Yeah you can tether on that. Just not the unlimited goody bags from what I gather!

Apparently you can't tether an iPhone on giffgaff unless you jailbreak it according to their website"

It's turned into the twilight zone - I may not be ready for a tablet.

"If you are not on a low end budget the Microsoft Surface is the smart choice. It has usb, it takes smart cards and history will show its the ipad killer.

Surface is great in theory but in reality it's riddled with problems. It's been a bit of an embarrassment for Microsoft really which is a shame as I love Windows Phone.

Riddled with problems? Where did you get that one from? The RT out performs everything on the market, granted some imoan users are not happy as it will kill the ifad off over time. The surface pro has not been as popular but its not really a tablet you can compare to others as its essentially a laptop without a permanent keyboard.

Your average consumer isn't going to take a punt on something so expensive that they can't walk into their local Currys and have a go of first."

Microsoft made a HUGE error when they cancelled the Microsoft Courier - that looked amazing, and before the iPad was announced.

I doubt there's any sensible prospect of them catching up now, at least for quite a while.

I don't have status anxiety. I want something a bit bigger than my phone screen but is still small enough to fit in a shoulder bag and carry around.

I have a Nexus 7, the latest model. It was voted best tablet on the market around Christmas and I can say it is very good, I've had no problems with it at all and the screen is amazing to watch videos on etc. The only thing that lets it down is that it only has a front facing camera which makes it awkward to take photos with unless I want to be in them!

Although I think it's great, and would recommend it to anyone, if I had the money I'd buy an iPad.

Ahh the iPad, like a computer, but not as good... iPad mini, like an iPad, but not as good...

More seriously same advice I give on computers, first thing to work out is what you want to do with it, once you know that only then should you go find the one that does it, at least to your satisfaction.

Indeed! Your software requirements should dictate your hardware. Is, for example, all of your music in iTunes? If so then it makes sense to stick with Apple and buy an ipad. Your choice is then simply whether you want the mini sized one or the normal one.

Think about why you want a tablet and the things you'll use it for. Just browsing the Web and Facebook...? Watching TV in bed...? Listening to music around the house...? Playing games such as Angry Birds...?

That's still expensive for a tablet. High end price for a sub par product and one that consumers cant play on easily before committing to. I believe that even after some trickery with the memory on surface you still have more available on the iPad too. I don't see why you're getting so upset over this - perhaps trying to justify a poor purchase on your part.

As I said above, I am probably being too fussy and looking for functionality it wasn't designed for.

Primarily it would be used for web, music, games and all the handy little apps you get these days. I have all my music in iTunes as well as a separate hard drive as mp3's, so no issue there.

My biggest bug bear with them, is if you create a file e.g a document the only way of getting it off is to email it. Plus no file explorer type functionality.

Dropbox and Evernote for file dumping

Or sync would do the same thing I guess but iTunes again

Air video will allow you to watch none iTunes library movies

Of course your iPhone apps are free to be transferred you don't have to buy them again

Out of all of the messages on here these posts seem a bit over passionate. Anyone would think youre getting a commission from Apple and Micrisoft . This is just a light discussion on tablets, so chill out guys. This seems to be turning into a MINES BETTER THAN YOURS forum

I am passionate about technology and I like a debate on it. If people want to discuss their opinions on a topic on an open forum then thats cool. I don't think it's fair to pass off my posts as wanting to prove I'm better than anyone else. If Microsoft sorted out the issues I mentioned then i would certainly consider a Surface as I think it has great potential - but as it is the sales talk for themselves.

Go for the iPad or iPad mini.

By far the easiest to use (in my opinion). Contrary to public belief you can get flash through many apps and you can also get Microsoft programmes.

You can also get adaptors for USB/sd drives ect. You can get keyboards that work really well and no you don't have to be tied to iTunes. Just jail break it and then everything is free

I've used an iPad 1 since they were first released. I nearly didn't get one because of the 'it's just a big phone' thing, and I can't manage files etc.

But I've used it daily and probably do about half of my work on it now. But it's not a replacement computer, instead it's a whole different way of working and I don't notice things like the file management thing at all. Dropbox and goodreader plus loads of apps that sync with Dropbox sort all those problems.

And I'm still using the first generation iPad, and it still has the same battery life and has never given me any problems. Although a mini is now getting tempting...

you don't need to go down the 3/4g ipad route... the wifi only one is fine if you have an iphone, as it has a built in wifi hotspot.. so all you need to do is sync iphone with ipad..

it is easy... even i can do that

I love my big ipad.. and i got an ipad mini for my niece...

since i got both i decided not to double up everything syncing..

so for example... iphone for music and podcasts.... ipad for apps and videos... so they compliment each other...
