Sierra Nevada would probably become my base of operations. Lake Tahoe, perhaps somewhere a little more remote. You know the kind of place where you can shoot people for trespassing on your land.

That's not true. Freehold and leasehold don't exist. If you buy a house, you buy the land it sits on. If you buy an apartment, you own the walls, ceilings, floors and balconies/terrace.

I own my house in Spain (and I love it).

I also own the two and a half acres it sits in. The land ownership goes into a National Database called the Catastral.

Why on earth do you think you wouldn't own the land? (Of course a fifth floor apartment would be different!)
