Reading area

Does anyone else find this term derogatory when used to indicate a company has job vacancies?

As far as I am concerned hiring a car/van piece of equipment etc, is fine but it should not be applied to jobs and careers

Am I being over sensitive or do others think it's an Americanism that has crept in to usage here in the UK and we could do without it?

It's an American term that's crept in I think.

I dislike the term 'human resources' as if employees are all jumbled in with furniture, stationery and fixtures and fittings.

Not really. "We are willing to exchange money for a time limited use of something"

So whether it's a power tool for a couple of days or you for as long as you're willing to work there, the word fits what's being described.

When I was an employee I'd look at it that they're "hiring" my time.

Anything outside of my contractual obligation was on me to respond if I so choose.

Personally I think that words and the way we refer to people are important. If I wanted a cleaner I'd much prefer to employ a person than hire someone's time.

A quick search on OED shows it's been in use since c1400. Of course you have the right to find it offensive but that doesn't stop it being a completely valid term that is widely understood.

Not sure if it’s your cup of tea, but the Care industry is crying out for carers. Not the most well paid job, and not great if you have a bad back or owt, but just throwing it out there.

If you don’t drive some companies do walking routes.

Training and uniform usually provided. DBS check carried out too.

I don’t suppose you get many objections full stop.

It's offensive when job agencies have their shop window/floor signs that say "We're hiring now", when clearly they are not. Doe ASA standards not apply here?
