The French Foreign Legion

The French Foreign Legion, made famous by the 1939 Laurel and Hardy film The Flying Deuces, allows foreign recruits to gain French Citizenship after 5 years service which of course has is drawbacks. Should the English adopt this model and allow the dingy boat people an opportunity to be granted English citizenship after 5 years in the English Foreign Legion? They would be fed, housed, learn English and make new friends. Could this work?

I can see the right wing spin on this idea right now

“First our jobs. Then our women. Now we’re training them to take our country”

Cheshire

Unfortunately it’s been tried and didn’t work. I served in a Lancashire regiment and we had to accept people from Wigan and Blackburn that was bad enough but at least they came from the Red Rose County.

But some lad managed to get into my Regiment and….sorry still upsetting for me, he was born in YORKSHIRE !!!!

Brought his bloody tea with him as well.

Let’s accept people likely experiencing trauma into our country after they’ve fought for our country? I don’t agree with the idea for many, many reasons. So it’s a no from me, Tom.

They’re mercenaries so they fight for both of us.There is no contradiction unless we send them into their brethren

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

Does England have the capacity to offer anyone citizenship? There's no such thing as an English passport.

So people who have fled war zones, faced unimaginable hardships and persecution. Perhaps seen family members killed or maimed should be press ganged into being further traumatised. The FFL is

renowned for its brutal training regimen.

#2: French Foreign Legion was made famous long before Laurel and Hardy

Innit. For starters a 'proud Englishman' should be able to appreciate the difference between 'Dingy' and 'Dinghy' at bare minimum. Someone needs to check this guy's credentials, I can smell a deporting from here.

If they are fleeing war zones/persecution why do they throw their documents (proof) away? If you were accused of a crime you didn't commit but had proof of your innocence would you destroy it?.It is not the people traffickers who are destroying or seizing documents, they have no need or incentive to,they are not modern sl@vers.The Para's,Commando's and SAS have "brutal" training regimes, wtf do you want or expect? Gutless clueless weak little drips going into combat? It is troops from weak training regimes that get themselves and their mates slaughtered, look back in history.

Hayling Island

I worked with a Syrian guy a few years back. And got to know him and his story pretty well. The trip he had to make to get here and into the country was more harrowing and mentally and physically challenging than any special forces selection in the world. Quite frankly the "Dingy People" that make it here are the best of the best! They are intelligent, resourceful, determined, persistent, resilient and extremely driven! They are so desperate to work hard and prove themselves, and earn their place in this country, that I have nothing but respect for those that make it here!

It would be far more beneficial to this country to get our own layabouts and malingerer's off their arses and doing something for their own country!

It makes you wonder why none of the Yorkshire regiments wanted these fine specimens of fighting-age Yorkshiremen?

Don't we already make it hard for Gurkhas to have citizenship here? They're already basically the British foreign legion.

Remember that the French Foreign was formed as the French were tired of losses of their own citizens in wars, so the Legion was formed to gather societies unwanted to fight for them. Becoming a French citizen was a reward for surviving.

They are now one of the best fighting forces in the world and more choosy on who they take in
