With a new film about him coming out, was he a good man or not. I quite admire him, and have seen his tomb in Paris. Even the duke of Wellington admired him.

Yes and no would be my answer

In civil standards for France he was extremely important.Recreated society there for the better

However he was utterly unwilling to come to a peace deal with us that didn’t involve surrender.He even said as much himself

He created both tyrannies and free countries in equal measure.

The best general in Europe at the time without a doubt

He had a huge amount of admiration from all sorts of sources, military and the arts ect. Lord Byron really respected him (and feared in equal measure). Byron and him had a certain disregard for the current moral values of the day. But then lots of the Romantics like Byron were massive perverts so I guess that makes sense

He inherited the war though so can’t all be blamed on him.

He also lost a lot of men fighting savages in Haiti.

However everything involving us and the French after he refused reasonable peace terms with us is on him.
