Britain should train a citizen army.

From the land of haribos.

Continue here any late comers, it was interesting seeing the replies. I was reading the news and I was a bit surprised when I read about how apparently britain should train a " citizen army" this was for the future, said the head army general sir patrick sanders.

He added that this is because of the ongoing threat of increased war from russia and it is not the first time that he have warned about it.

What is your view about it? Is it a good idea? I think that it could be good with general training for it as it could help the army if a war started, how would the selection work and should women also do it?

My view is that it is just to justify an increase in defence spending and recruitment. It’s this or conscription sort of thing.

They want people to be more aware for when equipment is available for numbers.Got a feeling there is a new 150,000 man target (double our current force)

Remember that it is predicted Ukraine will suffer at least 100,000 casualties this year so questions will be asked about our readiness

Nope. Not me. Never.

If the government wants people to kill other people they don't know that have undoubtedly been conscripted with no choice, then they can ask for volunteers, but I won't be one.

It’s due to the government that our armed forces are so depleted when I left the army in 1986 , it was short of soldiers back then but since Iran and Iraq it’s gone down hill with cuts etc , plus the after care for veterans is abysmal , a lot of soldiers are now sleeping rough after receiving no help

This is it. Conscription is never happening, they just want a bigger budget

I'd of thought the next war to be fought with heavy weaponry and bombs... why not get pilots ready to fly military planes/helicopters.

Foot soldiers are pointless when there are capabilities of a single palm sized drone killing a man using AI. Imagine millions of them being released.

Plus the looming fact that near enough every country has nuclear weapons or alliances to countries who do.

I guess at the end of the day it would be ideal for the world to have millions of footsoldiers kill each other using guns and decrease the world population.

Who here even knows why the war between Russia and Ukraine started?

Who can guarantee the Russians are the bad guys when Western media has repeatedly said how corrupt Ukraine is over the last decade. There is proof of articles being deleted/blocked that covered Ukraine being corrupt... you have to dig deep enough to find it.

You could wreck your brain trying to understand what is actually going on.

I think this is awful and I’m sorry that people experience this. It’s just again a testament to how the state will use life carelessly when they need to and go back to not giving a shit when they don’t.

Also I’d add that Iraq definitely harmed the reputation of the military I’d imagine. Because of Blair, the imbecile.

Never seen any articles deleted about Ukraines corruption and yes Russia did start this war.

Proof of the burying accusation?

Just because the Ukrainians aren’t living saints does not mean Russia isn’t the clear aggressor in this conflict.

What is going on is that people are unwilling to accept the brutality of the war that is going on.Clickbait news does not show the suffering it inflicts.

This and yes russia started it, the videos about thinking it is not russia who started it is click bate ones, putin wants to reestablish a russian empire, it will never happen and it is well documented what he wants in his speeches too, he even said that he want to take alaska back too.

to be honest i think west is just as bad as east

no one is going to say they was at fault

youve got west saying come and join us you will be safe, whilst youve also got west saying come and join us you will be safe.

ukraine to a degree was neutral ( no mans land ) and theres no harm in having a green area between east and west.

it certainly didnt need to badgered to come and join us by either east or west which certainly did happen.

as goes for joining go to hell comes to mind.

send in the rich first then i might think about it.

many cant buy food and where not even in a war

bills are soaring and we are not even in a war

but someone making a killing

Regardless, I stand by my comment in the thread leading up to this one.

Ukraine has proved that mass matters. We need to hugely increase the size of our forces. The entire Army (Reg & Res) can fit into Wembley.

Ref pilots. It takes up to 5 years to train them and there are just not the platforms.

The woke population needs to step up or we will be at war in 3 years.

When you consider that only around 25% of those who apply to join the forces actually make it through selection and basic training, the idea is a non-starter.

Then you need to factor in the cost; both financial and in the fact we would need to free up serving soldiers to train them; its a non-starter.

Iraq did not harm the reputation of the military at all. It proved that serious underfunding sent soldiers to war in vehicles designed for Northern Ireland which when hit by mines cost lives or missing limbs. It proved that the helicopters we were flying some literally fell out of the sky and needed whole engine replacements because they were never designed to be in that heat. It proved that many military had to buy their own equipment as what was issued was not satisfactory and a whole updated rifle as they didn’t work in that environment

It created loss of life and multiple life physical and mental injuries where many cannot get any help from the government that sent them.

I stood in someone’s office in 2004 and kn his floor were about 40 files of soldiers who had life changing injuries and that was one months worth.

Time and time again the military is called upon not just for war or peace keeping but to cover fire strikes, hospitals during covid, driving refuse trucks, supplying help to areas in this country which are flooded, let alone all the counter T errorism work they do.

The forces reputation was not damaged, the people who send them and cut their costs yearly was

I also want to add this, here is an interesting thing, why is it that the aggressor almost never win? Lets take afghanistan as an example, there they have a saying "you have the watches, but we have the time", noone have been able to win there.

There are plenty of examples is aggressors winning but the problem ends up being winning the peace. The conquered are still around after all and the question is what to do with them. They go about their lives as normal and have to be persuaded to offer their loyalty to the new regime

The problem with Afghanistan is the Americans saw it like Europe post war so they paid a lot of politicians to say nice things a lot of photo ops.Meanwhile they never looked as the politicians stole aid that was sent (Tons of farming equipment especially that’s why there’s a food crisis). That has always been the case for Afghanistan. It is rude to call them feudal but that is the way you should see things as a starting point.Americans only cared about what the high ranking lords were saying that rarely filtered down to the common man

What would a war between the UK and Russia actually look like? We're not going to be laying siege to Moscow and Russia won't be invading the UK.

We'd attack each other's digital infrastructure as well as messing with oil and gas supplies. Then there's the social media manipulation that we already do.

Anything more than that will get very hot, very fast So I don't really see where we'd suddenly have a need for a huge conventional conscription army.

Having suicidal people play around with guns and our nation's defence doesn't sound like a good idea imo. We need people that actually want to be there. Just because someone has the physical capacity to work doesn't mean they would make a good soldier.

It's all very well spending gazillions on raising foot troops and supplying them (on either side) in a future conflict.

.

Once the nukes start flying, they'll be country-sized glass car parks around the world. There won't be anything to return back to.

Maybe banging home the economic costs of fighting wars might eventually cause people to think a little bit before starting them, since the horror of just blowing your neighbour’s fucking brains out doesn’t seem to be sufficiently disincentivising.
