So this year's time has been released and it's still at 90 seconds....

That's still very scary because to put into context, it was at 3 minutes in 1984 when very cold wat relations with Russia were at their worst.

I bet it'll be closer next year if Trump is about again.

Your thoughts.....

Depends, did you bite the tip off the other end?

Be honest; I know you can't resist a delicious tip.

I haven’t tried it yet for fear of ruining my brew.

But I do.

Love the delicious tip.

But the battery hasn't been changed in years.

It's been closer in 1991 I believe.

All big talk in my opinion. Nukes are a countries deterrent and not there to be intentionally used.

Not even worth worrying about Trump. People think POTUS has the power to launch a nuke but his military generals have to agree first and can stop the decision to press the red button!

Other bigger things to worry about in the world than nukes

Some commentators are arguing it's actually closer, but that the committee has been leant upon to make it look less dire so we don't panic.

Naaaaoooo, the powers that be have so much more to lose these days.

America only fights wars against people that can’t fight back. Been doing that since the 60s

My thoughts are that we're essentially powerless. We can use our vote, protest, do 'our bit' but when push comes to shove we're literally just another resource to be used up.

I always thought the Doomsday clock was about nuclear weapons but it looks like it has expanded to include climate change, AI and a whole bunch of other stuff which seems excessive.

From a personal perspective I think humanity is enjoying a golden age because of medical advances etc but I guess the fact that we have the most humans ever alive with increasingly better global health and wealth doesn’t fit with the doom mongers.

" Nukes are a countries deterrent and not there to be intentionally used."

Are they there to be UNintentionally used then? For them to be any deterrent, there must be a scenario in which they would be used.

That's as maybe, but I don't share your confidence that the Generals are anymore trustworthy!!!!!

DUMFRIES

No one in their right mind would ever purposefully launch a nuke at another country. Nukes are mutually assured destruction, Windows between launch and impact are long enough for retaliation launches. They're nothing more than a cock measuring contest. I think we'll see aliens before we ever see nuclear war

Never underestimate the hubris of human stupidity.

Never underestimate the stupidity of humans in large groups.

We're devastating our natural world, and the people in charge generally think it isn't going to affect them personally. They are focused on the games of power and politics that preoccupy that stratum of human society. When something big gives out, and it will eventually, people and countries will get desperate - properly desperate. Desperation is ugly, and our species is inherently violent. Governments and factional leaders will reach for the big stick, and it's not going to be pretty. A lot of western citizens have no idea what war or civil unrest really looks like. Sooner or later we, or our children, or their children, are going to find out. The veneer of civilisation is very thin, and our complex technological society breaks down very readily when things go wrong.

I'd like to believe I'm wrong, and that the future is Star Trek and the Federation, but I don't think I am; it's Mad Max.

When? Who knows? In 1914 and 1939 the world wasn't at war, until it was.

If any country out of the UN was to strike a UN country then ALL UN countries are allowed to strike back at the country that originally launched the nuke.

If you want to worry about something then AI is a massive threat to human life, far more than nukes!

Anyway enough of this depressing talk off for a good wank in the chat

I've recently watched the Enterprise mirror universe double episode again. Zephram Cochrane shoots the first Vulcan when he steps off his ship. I'm afraid that we may actually be the mirror universe.

I watched a documentary on the beeb the other day.

This clock was to warn us how close our leaders were to taking us to our doom hence the name doomsday clock, but somewhere along the line the ladies of greenham common have been forgotten, having warheads on our soil without a f$ck you to us, has been forgotten.

So the purpose of this clock was to warn us how our leaders were irresponsible and to raise our voice against them.

But seeing the attitude on here, duck and cover is still a thing that people consider.

I watched that too, it was mad when the glowing blue guy got his penis out and the batman dude started having sex to Leonard Cohen for very little reason.

Yesss. It's not Doom Mongering as some on here said and also implied...

I was curious, but shoulda known better as I've seen responses in the past on threads regarding Covid Virus, Trump, NHS Nurses wanting more money etc, and despaired.

When a scientist warns this bomb may set the atmosphere on fire, and the politicians still go ahead and test it.

Well there has to be some way to let those in power sorry those who we give power too, be kept in line.

The doomsday clock is suppose to shock us into action and did in the past, but as life goes on and hope is withdrawn, we have forgot to protest and would rather have no protests at all.

Well I still have my shiny tinfoil blanket we got in those nuclear disaster kits and get under the table, duck and cover always works.
