"I see clothes as part of the costumes we wear to express parts of our character. I also see them as integral to how we perform parts of our identity. Is dressing well important? Obviously it’s depending on so many contextual things like activity, company, location etc. but if I’m going to meet someone on fab for example or going to a social I think it’s important to dress in a way that best represents you. That’s the most important thing. So I’d expect effort. If it’s casual that’s fine, don’t misunderstand me. But that you’re wearing what YOU would wear to make a good impression of yourself but in a way that represents your authentic self. You could wear a full Nike tech trackie but I’d expect that it was an outfit you like to wear and that’s you making an effort. " I get that, this makes sense to me. I don’t disagree

"It depends on the occasion and I'll dress accordingly but I won't seek out events where I have to get all suited up as it's just not my style. Anything smart casual is fine but ultimately, I want to be comfortable with myself before I'm expected to be comfortable around others " 100% with this.

"Depends on your definition of well. Do I look like I've made an effort? Usually. Did any of the items I'm wearing cost more than a tenner? Probably not." Yes, it depends on the definition of well too. I would say it is to look presentable and yes to make an effort as well

"I would say yes it is, because it reflects who you are when going out and also what you wear is important as how you would like to present yourself, because what you wear is how you present yourself to the world I like this quote " Clothes dont dictate who you are as a person, but typically it is your first impression. What is your view about it it and how do you dress when going out? I like to wear sporty clothes that show my form and even when going out with the rubbish I put on some nice clothes, because you never know who you will meet " Agree,I always dress up when I go out as I'm single

"I dress to be comfortable and to fit the event etc. I do think dressing up isn't a priority now and we do dress differently than 30yrs ago +. Going back to my late teens/early twenties, we got dressed up to go out on a Friday/Saturday night. Most clubs didn't accept jeans/trainers/ t shirts so blokes wore trousers and shirts, the females wore smart trousers/skirt and a top or a nice dress. " tge clubs i went to 30 years ago didnt let you in wearing a shirt. Leathers ripped t shirts jeans leather pants were the thing

"I panic when people say this. I mean clean, hygienic etc is important. But in actuality I’m not really so worried what someone is wearing as long as they’re happy in their style and comfortable etc. and I’ll do the same with my clothes. I love the idea of being all dressed up but I never feel I look immaculately groomed, or polished - I’ve big jazzy hair and I’m a very round shape so clothing is a source of hang up as I may struggle to look the way my opinion of true style looks. And I hate the idea I’ll be judged for that. If that makes sense. " This. I wear clothes I enjoy wearing and what feels super comfortable and cozy. Am not really the type to wear something that feels uncomfortable or that isn't who I am, just to look stylish or fancy. And I appreciate others who wear what they wear because that's what they enjoy, rather than wearing stuff to follow the trend/crowd.

"I would rather people judge me for the person I am rather than the clothes that I wear. I have lovely clothes which I wear for the right occasions but when out with my dogs I wear old stuff and wellingtons." People need to get to know you to judge you for the person you are. First impressions count whether we like it or not. That doesn't mean that everyone makes bad judgements if you're not dressed a certain way though

"I'm of the age now where practicality trumps style every time. We are off to the theatre tonight but I won't be penguining up. The wind is howling so it will be smart jeans, jumper and as we need to do a fair bit of walking it will be smart trainers rather than shoes. I couldn't give a toss what others think as I will be warm, comfortable and able to enjoy the show without feeling like a dogs dinner." That is good and enjoy being at the theatre tonight

"It depends on your definition of dressing well Put me in a Gucci suit and I look like a sack of spuds. Well doesn’t have to mean expensive, or a certain style. And that choice is personal. I look at people in football or sport wearing some of their styles and think “nope”, but that said it probably costs more than I earn in a year. I think you dress in what’s comfortable to you reflecting what you’re doing or where you are going " Yes, it depends on the definition on well too. I would say it is to look presentable as well.

"I would rather that we (collectively) were comfortable and able to perform our daily routine, rather than putting on a costume. Life isn't a pantomime. I hate assumptions that because I'm female, I should wear certain things for work or interviews or that I should wear makeup or high heels. I will always be well presented and appropriate for the occasion, but I'm not going to wear certain garments or apply frippery unless I want to. If I am required to wear safety equipment to perform a specific task, e.g. associated with my work, I will obviously do that, before someone goes "but what if.....?" Also, no job in the world REQUIRES a dress or high heels or makeup as a fundamental and safety specific part of the job. So any company insisting on such things as part of a uniform are doing so for appearance sake. And if the same standards aren't applied to absolutely everyone, well......." Quite agree. No one dictates to me either what I can and cannot wear. That is controlling behaviour and narcasistic. I bet many here dress to impress each to our own.

"Quite right, clothes are part of a first impression. Clothes can be a social tool. I suppose it depends if you have to impress anyone or if on the other hand you don't care. Personally on general day to day basis I'm not needing to make any impression or care what people think. So when I'm not at work as lone parent I'm generally doing housework, exercise or DIY. So generally it's not about smart, it's about practicality and comfort. So I tend to look a bit scruffy at the supermarket or the school run. But I'm not in the least bothered by that. However when I need to I scub up good (if I do say so myself). Because there are time I do want to make a great impression or I want to feel my best or more often jist for my other half so she can be proud of me and show me off. " Yes, you are right there, it is part of the first impression too.

My view is that how you present yourself is important because although most will deny it, people judge you by how you look. " As a clearly visible Trans Woman, I feel it's super important to have make up on, and dressed very smartly... That way, I'm clearly stating I'm presenting as female and would like to be addressed as such. I've had conversations with BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) friends and colleagues and they too feel the need to be well judged and accepted. It's interesting I knew a manager of a blind man (single) who didn't know he looked disheveled at work. It was a difficult decision whether to address the issue.

"Yes absolutely, it's important to dress well. If you don't take your appearance seriously then no one else is going to take you seriously. " I can't say I agree. I think pre-judging people based on their clothing isn't very helpful. I take people seriously if their words carry meaning, not because they've got a nice blazer on. I appreciate I'm probably alone on this thread thinking this!
