Tattoo session advice

I am having the first session on my sleeve tattoo tomorrow. 6 hours long

I've had a tattoo before but not this long a session.

So my question is, any tips for it? Is it rude to take a book? listen to music on my phone?

I'm not worried about the tattoo itself, more the sitting there for 6 hours...

Eat a decent high calorie meal before you have a big session, be well rested, well hydrated and take chocolate.. dark chocolate ideally(genuinely helps with dopamine and pain tolerance) also don't be afraid to ask for a few minute break if you need it.

I know nothing about tattoo sessions but I doubt they'd find it rude if you took a book or listened to music. It's difficult to keep up a conversation with anyone for six hours leave alone a relative stranger. I take a book to the hair salon and that's four hours at the most

Perfectly acceptable to take a book or your phone etc to occupy you while sitting for a tattoo.

Take plenty of drink and things to keep your blood sugar up.

I've had a couple of 5+ hour sittings and almost fell asleep....until the highlights

It's absolutely not rude to take a book/phone/music, our tattoo artist always says to chill and do what we want to keep ourselves busy, we chat a little but if your in for a big session there's only so much talking you can do

Eat and drink normally, pack something sugary too in case you feel yourself wilting,don't drink alchol beforehand as it can make you bleed more.

Read,watch your phone or fall asleep like I always seem to do. Time goes past quicker than you think.

Don't be ashamed to ask for a break if you need it.

I talk to my artist the whole time, she'd done loads for me so we're pretty friendly these days.

Curious to know who you're getting it done by if it's local!

Ive taken headphones, alternated between listening to music, watching a movie they had on, getting involved in the chat between staff on the day, read a book, even fell asleep.

Take your own food and maybe agree a short break for both of you, but don't keep them hanging around while you're off getting lunch or something.

Keep hydrated, sleep well the day before and just be a nice customer

I worried more for the artist than me.

I just had to lie there and enjoy the sensations. Addictive.

OP you'll be fine. Just enjoy the time, take a drink or two and if your artist is anything like mine, try not to laugh at the conversations too much as you don't want to end up with ink in the wrong places.

9 hours Don't think I could go that long.

If the artist is anything like me, he won't want to be talked to while he is concentrating on work but I gather I'm more anti-social than most.

It still blows my mind that tattooers are prepared to do sittings as long as that. I blame that "tattoo fixers" programme - one of many issues I have with it!

When I was working on bigger pieces my tattooist wouldn't do much more than three hours in a sitting, he always said that was about the trauma limit of most people's skin - longer than that and the swelling and bleeding can start to affect the accuracy of his work.

Yeah I don't know how people do it. Longest I've done was a bit under 2hrs and that's about my limit. Any more than that and everything just *hurts* badly and I start to feel a bit unwell.

Right?! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think three and a half was my longest, I was pouring with sweat and every joint in my body had started to seize up by the end of it.

But to answer OP's question: I'm sure the needle wielder won't object to you listening to music, or reading a book as long as you keep still. The key is communication tbh; "do you mind if I listen to my iPod/read the Twilight series while you work?"

One of the chaps I used to go to said he had a client that used to fall asleep in the chair every time they visited

Had a 12 hour session on my leg a few years ago. Best thing I do was have something to watch. Kept a good distraction. And don't be afraid to say when you need a break.

Oh, and don't be afraid to ask to lie down.

I have *all* of my machine tattoos lying down. I feel extremely lightheaded and like I'm going to pass out within a few seconds of the tattoo starting if I don't lie down.

Hand poke tattoos have all been fine, but I don't get on with machine tattooing at all in that way. I have no idea why. But I just tell my tattoo artist when I book and they've always been fine with it.

Talk to your artist dude , the more rapport you get going with him the more chance youl get in a good convo and he might go over time a bit , that's what I always go , but the guy who does mine is a ollld mate now

Depends where this tattoo is on your body. Legs and arms then you’ll be reet. Chest or ribs, not so much. I did sit through about 5 hours on my chest but it was genuinely awful in comparison to elsewhere. I tend to chat the whole time but that’s because I find it passes the time better. Personal preference I guess.
