I really don't understand how people think it's hard to believe.

There's nothing in orbits that can't be explained with triangles (if you try hard enough), and people say COVID was a circle like planets, but if you look at a wheel it doesn't make sense without straight spokes so circles can't be trusted anyway.

Plus, you can only see planets through microscopes and COVID through telescopes, and their eyes are bent glass, so of course everything seems bent if you look at it bently.

Is it Summer yet?

Terry Pratchett's Discworld books explain this perfectly. The Earth is a flat disc, which is balanced on the back of 4 giant elephants, which in turn are standing on the back of a giant turtle named The Great A'Tuin

Flerfers are the most stupid of all conspiracy theorists.

Flerfer;

You cant prove the earth is round.

Me;

I’ve been on hundreds of flights, country to country, continent to continent and seen the earths curvature with my own eyes.

I’ve completed more HALO jumps than I care to recall and seen the earths curvature with my own eyes.

I’ve sat on beaches, all over the world and watched ships disappear over the horizon.

I’ve watched thousands of sunsets.

Flerfer;

You’re telling lies!!!!!

First three, maybe.

Fourth one, you honestly believe I’ve never seen a sunset? You’re an idiot.

I feel if one doesn't know logic is inherently sticky one needs to brush up on one's Gödel, Zeno of Elea, and dialetheism.

But I love the way Fluffy keeps me blocked and it was a valiant effort so Fluffy and Willy are always welcomed equally .

Meme, I'm afraid!

I gather the real flat earth views are quite convoluted, although they have quite a lot in common with other conspiracy theories - shadowy cabal hiding the truth because reasons, you'll never guess the ethnic background of the cabal, only they know the truth, etc.

My favourite scientific experiments by these Flat Earther nut jobs are in the documentary ‘Behind the Curve’ made in 2018 (and is on Netflix) . YouTuber Mark Sargent does one experiment, involving a flashlight shining through two holes in boards set a distance apart, it’s a beautiful piece of simple science that serves as the documentary's ending and he’s completely stumped, it’s just blown his bullshit up and the best bit is that it’s by his own hand.

I love conspiracy theorists.

I explained to a guy once that one of the best conspiracies was the cabal's active choice to encourage conspiracy theories when they came to Earth (flat or oblate spheroid irrelevant at this juncture ), finance them, and let the conspiracy theorists believe they'd found deeper truths.

All as another deliberate act of misdirection about the cabal's real motives.

I could see his brain working and his eyes whirring whilst trying to compute that his pet theories were another layer of conspiracy to conceal reality.

He went very quiet and wandered off.

None of us saw him again.

Seen it, comedy gold....

At the end his comment, a very confused "that's.............interesting"

I've seen flerfers claim he's an actor. Well, maybe he is. What did you make of the experiment?

Apparently the moon landing footage is all CGI.

Er, have you seen the quality of CGI 20 years ago, let alone in 1969 when we landed on the moon?

They all have the common sense gene removed.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld books explain this perfectly. The Earth is a flat disc, which is balanced on the back of 4 giant elephants, which in turn are standing on the back of a giant turtle named The Great A'Tuin

I love Discworld! "

I was going to say it sounds alot like a Terry Pratchett novel, the only thing missing is a WIZZARD running amock

"My favourite scientific experiments by these Flat Earther nut jobs are in the documentary ‘Behind the Curve’ made in 2018 (and is on Netflix) .

They all have the common sense gene removed."

Let's not forget the Creationists either, who believe that the world is only a few thousand years old and that evolution has not happened. Unlike those pesky scientists, with their evidence

Saw one the other day debunking evolution because and I quote he's "never seen a monkey born that turned into a human"

I'm still pondering if he was serious or just trolling them.

I spend way too much time on a Flerfer Facebook page. On the other hand, it's better than any comedy on the telly.

Fler; talking about "we Americans"

Me; I'm not in America.

Flerfer; you are!!!

Me; I'm not.

Flerfer; then how did you get on this page??????

Me; saw it, thought it would be fun, asked to join, accepted.

Flerfer; that's a lie. Facebook is American. If you're not American you can't join!!!!

Me; and yet here I am along with 32 million other Brits.

Looks at Flerfers profile

Me; I see you've got friends from 9 different countries............

Being (mildly) serious for a moment, I think behavioural/philosophical and psychological approaches to understanding any form of thinking (crazy or mainstream) are often more revealing than the "Jo said xxxx. Discuss how true xxxx is" approach.

These things operate on many levels, probably most of which we're yet to uncover.

Yes. The why is more important than the what.

I'm convinced it's a deep fear and inability to deal with that fear. A sense of powerlessness and a need for control.

Rather than therapy, meds, and maybe a bit of a cry (been there, done that), they go for "I know a secret that makes me powerful and at least I'm better off than you in this screaming late capitalist death spiral".

I just wish they'd dissemble in private and not inflict it on the rest of us.

Agreed (mostly). There have been quite a few studies looking at the link in the upsurge of "alt" to the increase in post-Financial Crash/Austerity economic conditions. The "spanner in the works" is how much the ascendancy of social media has also played a role.

The thing I'd disagree with is, although they're fucking annoying, most fucking annoying people (not all - some are made that way and that's a separate conversation) wouldn't be fucking annoying if they had better life prospects, education, travel, connections and so on. So I want to change their worlds, rather than let them congregate madly and sadly in private. Whilst taking the piss out of them like this thread does too, obvs. My brutal cunt does need to come out and play as a brutal cunt.

Flat earthers are an easy one to pick on because their cognitive biases clearly conflict with so much other evidence. The deeper problem for me is that we _all_ have at least one thing that we pdeeply believe to be true that isn’t - we know that must be the case because no one is right about everything and yet we all truly believe everything we “know” is true. Therefore, by definition, we are all susceptible to these biases but will have no idea about it.

True but I’m open to being presented with evidence contrary to my beliefs and will adopt a new position accordingly. Conspiracy theorists and flat earthers will not change their minds, adopting anything which might support their stance, which is why they are so derided.

Agreed in nearly all parts. There's a term in philosophy called "transcendental signifier", which means (among other things) the unevidenced/unproven belief(s) you hold upon which other beliefs are built.

In maths, two examples are the concepts of infinity and zero. Unproven, but bloody useful.

Biology emerges from chemistry, chemistry emerges from physics, physics can't resolve quantum and relative, and maths underlies/supports a lot of physics.

So, sorry scientists, but you too are operating within belief systems. Much better belief systems than prior millennia have afforded us, but belief systems nonetheless.

Whitehead, Russell, and Quine were good at digging this in the ribs from the analytic/mathematic school, Gödel from mathematics, and Foucault, de Beauvoir, Derrida and others from the continental school.

Plus, it doesn't seem too crazy to make the statement "until we know EVERYTHING, we can't say ANYTHING with certainty". Because we don't know how the slightest piece of missing information affects the overall picture.

And then we can discuss whether "knowing" is sufficient to explain "being"...you can choose Hamlet from the arts, any range of philosophers, particularly posthuman philosophy and how it engages with anthropocentrism, and unresolved science too.

So yup - I agree.

Science is so much better than gods or other belief systems, because it gathers sufficient "evidence" to support a theory experimentally, but it's also flapping around, and its own "transcendental signifiers" are unproven for being up to the job of significant further inroads into knowledge...let alone wisdom.

There are some very good minds pushing at those boundaries now.

I can imagine, whatever they discover and it becomes the "new knowledge", that too will be displaced in time.

I hope we're still around as a species to enjoy the adventure.

BTW - has anyone seen a stray goat on the threads?

It's not mine - just curious .

"I really don't understand how people think it's hard to believe.

Is it Summer yet?"

It’s an oxymoron, if the earth is flat! how do they account for all the tall mountains etc… of course that’s a useless argument… haha

On the big scheme of things who cares, what matters is that we try and take care of the planet and those that live upon it…

Is it really a matter of life and death?

Doctor “I’m afraid we need to do life saving surgery”

Patient “Do you believe the earth is flat?”

Doctor “hmm, i think we will let this one go hahahaha”

"I just wonder where they think the edges are. And what happens there."

Apparently it's an ice wall, guarded by trained penguins.

That no ones ever seen the ice wall, knows how the penguins were trained, how they kill, whoos been killed or where the bodies are buried all appear wholly irrelevant.

My favourite youtube clip is the flat earther who created an experiment to prove beyond doubt the earth is flat. Experiment failed miserably and obviously.

He can be heard in his clearly baffled exclamation "this is...............interesting???????? "

Actually, the reality is that it's actually shaped like a Gargantuan Space Hamster with ogre hairbrushes strapped to it with Snipplewhapper's Superglue. Hence the aspect of the hedgehog.

Try putting all the red meds in one bowl and flicking them into your mouth like peanuts.
