"I just wonder where they think the edges are. And what happens there." Terry Pratchett's Discworld books explain this perfectly. The Earth is a flat disc, which is balanced on the back of 4 giant elephants, which in turn are standing on the back of a giant turtle named The Great A'Tuin

"My favourite scientific experiments by these Flat Earther nut jobs are in the documentary ‘Behind the Curve’ made in 2018 (and is on Netflix) . YouTuber Mark Sargent does one experiment, involving a flashlight shining through two holes in boards set a distance apart, it’s a beautiful piece of simple science that serves as the documentary's ending and he’s completely stumped, it’s just blown his bullshit up and the best bit is that it’s by his own hand. " Seen it, comedy gold.... At the end his comment, a very confused "that's.............interesting" I've seen flerfers claim he's an actor. Well, maybe he is. What did you make of the experiment? Apparently the moon landing footage is all CGI. Er, have you seen the quality of CGI 20 years ago, let alone in 1969 when we landed on the moon? They all have the common sense gene removed.

"Im convinced even flat earthers don't believe the stuff they come out with. They just like to go against the grain me thinks. Look at the horizon, pics of earth from satellites. All the history of scientists trying to calculate the mass. The tides. The annoying thing is, i think flat earthers are just trying to annoy pps & i still let it annoy me lol. " Being (mildly) serious for a moment, I think behavioural/philosophical and psychological approaches to understanding any form of thinking (crazy or mainstream) are often more revealing than the "Jo said xxxx. Discuss how true xxxx is" approach. These things operate on many levels, probably most of which we're yet to uncover. Fascinating stuff .

Being (mildly) serious for a moment, I think behavioural/philosophical and psychological approaches to understanding any form of thinking (crazy or mainstream) are often more revealing than the "Jo said xxxx. Seen it, comedy gold.... Let's not forget the Creationists either, who believe that the world is only a few thousand years old and that evolution has not happened. Unlike those pesky scientists, with their evidence " Evidence. Schmevidence. Who needs experts (said Michael Gove to his mates)

I'm convinced it's a deep fear and inability to deal with that fear. A sense of powerlessness and a need for control. Therefore, by definition, we are all susceptible to these biases but will have no idea about it." Agreed in nearly all parts. There's a term in philosophy called "transcendental signifier", which means (among other things) the unevidenced/unproven belief(s) you hold upon which other beliefs are built. In maths, two examples are the concepts of infinity and zero. Unproven, but bloody useful. Biology emerges from chemistry, chemistry emerges from physics, physics can't resolve quantum and relative, and maths underlies/supports a lot of physics. So, sorry scientists, but you too are operating within belief systems. Much better belief systems than prior millennia have afforded us, but belief systems nonetheless. Whitehead, Russell, and Quine were good at digging this in the ribs from the analytic/mathematic school, Gödel from mathematics, and Foucault, de Beauvoir, Derrida and others from the continental school. Plus, it doesn't seem too crazy to make the statement "until we know EVERYTHING, we can't say ANYTHING with certainty". Because we don't know how the slightest piece of missing information affects the overall picture. And then we can discuss whether "knowing" is sufficient to explain "being"...you can choose Hamlet from the arts, any range of philosophers, particularly posthuman philosophy and how it engages with anthropocentrism, and unresolved science too. So yup - I agree. Science is so much better than gods or other belief systems, because it gathers sufficient "evidence" to support a theory experimentally, but it's also flapping around, and its own "transcendental signifiers" are unproven for being up to the job of significant further inroads into knowledge...let alone wisdom. There are some very good minds pushing at those boundaries now. I can imagine, whatever they discover and it becomes the "new knowledge", that too will be displaced in time. I hope we're still around as a species to enjoy the adventure. BTW - has anyone seen a stray goat on the threads? It's not mine - just curious .

"I really don't understand how people think it's hard to believe. There's nothing in orbits that can't be explained with triangles (if you try hard enough), and people say COVID was a circle like planets, but if you look at a wheel it doesn't make sense without straight spokes so circles can't be trusted anyway. Plus, you can only see planets through microscopes and COVID through telescopes, and their eyes are bent glass, so of course everything seems bent if you look at it bently. Is it Summer yet?so you do fall off the edge? I daren't Fred - I can't spend 8,862 hours waiting for the poor NHS to deal with the sprain when I hit the elephants... you'll be in orbit though Fred - gravity trebles at the edges and pulls you onto the elephants. Because of the triangles ." Is a triangle just a circle that’s built themselves a den?

And neither do the triangles!

"I just wonder where they think the edges are. And what happens there." Apparently it's an ice wall, guarded by trained penguins. That no ones ever seen the ice wall, knows how the penguins were trained, how they kill, whoos been killed or where the bodies are buried all appear wholly irrelevant. My favourite youtube clip is the flat earther who created an experiment to prove beyond doubt the earth is flat. Experiment failed miserably and obviously. He can be heard in his clearly baffled exclamation "this is...............interesting???????? "

"What I’d like to know (I believe the earth is round btw) is if it’s flat, why keep it secret? I mean a real reason to keep it secret, because to be totally honest it would have zero effect on me as it all works ok now irrelevant of its shape." Well, if we all knew...we'd probably go and annoy the hell out of those poor elephants and the turtle .

If people thought it were flat they would want to try see whats at the other side wheras a ball nobody would bother unless theyre hamsters " It would be pretty cool if we found giant hamsters running around inside the world though...wonder what the flat earthers would make of that .

"I’ve always suspected the world to be hedgehog shaped. I have no empirical proof whatsoever to substantiate this claim but Dave down the pub said it so it must be true. He also told me that drinking one’s own urine bestows superhuman powers… I’ve downed a pint of my own piss already today and think that I’m starting to develop x-ray vision. These meds are great by the way " Uhm....Davina..? Can you take this one please???
