I’m watching the Australian open can’t believe how uptight and anal these ball and towel people are. It’s like someone is holding their family hostage and they have a huge wooden penis up their ass.

Why don’t they chill a little and try having a bit of banter with the players ?

They're probably trained that way and I'm guessing most players want to just focus on their game and not be the recipient of two ball boys playing piggy in the middle with them

I used to work at Wimbledon, not as a ball boy but pulling the court covers on when it rained.

One year it didn't all tournament so I effectively got paid to watch tennis and put them on at the end of each day.

But yes, they're trained to stand stock still, not engage unless approached and to be almost 'invisible' at all times. If they fuck up they're out as there's no end of volunteers for the job.

There is the occasional nice player who treats them as human beings though and has banter.

If a player engages with a ball person fair enough but the ball persons are there to do their thing, in a professional and disciplined way, not to make unsolicited and potentially unwelcomed ‘banter’ with the players.

They could at least smile. If I was a ball person I’d introduce a smoking area in the corner and let them have breaks, they look overworked

I bet that affects their ability to exercise their right to strike ? If indeed ball people should be allowed to strike?, but that’s another issue I guess.

Advantage, Obi.

Worked as a steward at Wimbledon for a cpl of years, as said the rules set for the ball girls/boys are pretty strict..

Tbh have seen some players totally lose their shit when they are distracted so it's probably for the best, unless the players initiate it then don't go there..
