Quorn mince, is it any good?

I’m a meat eater but thought I’d try it out, economising and experimenting.

Do you have any veggie or vegan substitute recommendations?

I was a veggie for 5 years and would says it’s an OK substitute. It’s a bit mushier with less bite but it definitely does the job. Some people I know that eat meat actually prefer it.

There are better tasting vegan alternatives than Quorn and the texture is better too. I can’t recall the names but I buy them in Tesco etc

It's not the best- it tends to be a little bit "dry"

The This Isn't range is quite good.

You could also try using jackfruit as an alternative in chillis etc.

What are you wanting to make?? I haven't used 'mince' for 5-6 years as i use veggies / lentils and diced mushrooms in lasagnas + bolognaise ... my favourite at the moment is 'meatballs' (richmond) in tomato sauce +spaghetti.. So easy +tasty!

I love that you are experimenting

I've eaten quite a bit of vegan food of late. Much nicer than I'd expected tbh.

There's a ton of good recipes online with suggested substitutes.

And Greggs vegan sausage rolls are addictive.

I'm only part time though. Still like my bacon and chicken jalfrezis

I’m thinking about giving up meat, I’ve wanted to for ethical reasons for a long time but am doing a dry run to feel confident of my culinary skills and enjoyment.

I’d rather have lentils etc.

Beyond meat stuff is quite good

Another recommendation for Richmond sausages. Although I’m not convinced their pork sausages actually contain any meat….

Linda Mcartney stuff is basically flavoured (poorly) cardboard.

Quorn mince is nice.

The Richmond’s sausages and bacon are alright.

Linda McCartney’s burgers are the best. About all that her range is good for though imo.

And Aldi do amazing salt and vinegar no fish fillets and no chicken wings.

But since going veggie I’ve found the best way to eat veggie is to not try and find things that taste like meat. So lots of beans and lentils are great. Chickpeas, butter beans, kidney beans, lentils, quinoa, jackfruit, mushrooms are all great substitutes for things but obviously don’t taste like meat.

I also cook a lot of meals that don't include a veggie or vegan version of meat. But I have been vegetarian for more 30 years so I am used to not eating meat.

if you want to try quorn mince then make up some stock from cubes then soak the mince in it for 20 mins , also it cam then be added to fresh mince to bulk the fresh up

I've cut most of the meat out of my cooking.

I use quorn mince for my bobotie - it's fine. I prefer the Co-op "Gro" brand vegan mince though.

Linda McCartney sausages are great, especially the red onion and rosemary ones.

For chicken dishes, I buy The Vegetarian Butcher "What The Cluck" soya chicken. It tastes great and has excellent meaty texture.

Oh, Linda McCartney Mozarella burgers are good, and so are the Gro brand burgers from Co-op. They also make good meatballs.

Quorn steak and gravy pies are great too.

Aldi have a surprisingly wide frozen veggie range. The sausage rolls are almost up to Greggs standards. You can tell I’m a cheap date

I tried vegan bacon and sausage once. It was pretty good even though the texture left a bit to be desired. I think if I were to go veggie/vegan, I'd try to make as much of my diet foods that are "natural" (not sure if that's the right word) as opposed to meat-like vegan products.
