Police Destroy Tents of the Homeless

Reports that the Chief of Police for London has apologised after his men destroyed tents belonging to the homeless in November last year which is one of the winter months known for cold weather.

Why would they do this and who is ultimately responsible. Is Mayor Khan to blame ?

Oh that's coincidence. That is the same month that Suella Braverman (Home Secretary with responsibility for the police) said that she wanted to introduce policies to restrict homeless people using tents and that being homeless is a lifestyle choice. Oh yes she got sacked not long after.

Why wasn't this all over the news?

It's been two months since it happened.

And those two months are December and January, which are winter months in the UK, and some other places in the world too, known for cold weather.

It was all over the news. The point above about Suella Braverman pushing for it is spot on and that was what was primarily reported on at the time.

Homelessness is a UK embarrassment, politicians, celebs and even royalty all on the bandwagon when it suits or a decent headline is available!

If William wanted to fix homelessness he could do so single handily, imagine a Bob Geldof style call to arms, they’d be queuing up to be involved!

But no, grab a headline instead and let someone else deal with the issue!

National disgrace!

Obviously no one wants to read thr study, it’s just easier to be outraged at the police?

They were camping at the entrance of a hospital and causing issues for people visiting/leaving

They were asked to move and given 48 hours to relocate under a S35 order

“University College London Hospital complained to police about 10 tents at the entrance to the hospital, which had been there for nine months

Police had received reports of drug use and drug dealing, urination and defecation and of patients and staff being intimated or verbally abused by some of those begging and sleeping rough at the location.

Police informed those present on 6 & 7 November that the site, being private land, would be cleared on 10 November

On 10 November those present were told to leave the site. Some brought their belongings with them, others left them behind

The belongings that were left behind were considered 'abandoned', and were lawfully disposed of Veolia

One man chose not to leave the site and was arrested for breach of the s35 order. His belongings were not disposed of, since he had not 'abandoned' them, by refusing to leave the site.”

Come on guys, are you that easily misled?

Regardless of the the perceived nuisance even homeless people have rights

The Metropolitan police has admitted it was wrong to arrest and detain a homeless pensioner, who said their decision to remove him from his home of eight months in a tent was “inhumane”.

A letter from the Met said it will pay damages and apologise to Anthony Sinclair, 70, who had been sleeping outside a central London hospital.

What rights were violated when they were lawfully asked to leave private property after reports of anti social behaviour and given ample time to leave?

The police aren’t in the wrong here, they just know they’ll never win a PR campaign when so few people can get past a headline and find the facts, so instead they offer a quick sorry and buy a guy a new tent. Much easier than trying to make the masses understand the situation

It’s not a mater of “rights” it’s the law that’s here to protect everyone ….. even the daily mail stated “Met Police apologises for crackdown that saw homeless tents being ruined: Sir Mark Rowley admits force acted 'unlawfully' “ (and it’s not often I quote that fine source!)

Interesting, my source says his possessions weren’t disposed of, but yours are saying they were while he was in custody

That is unlawful and I’m glad the police are being held responsible for that

However that’s all they are being held responsible for, everything else seems to be well above the law and within the hospitals rights to request for them to be made to leave

Now there’s a quote you didn’t hear often……”the police aren’t in the wrong here”

That said, I do agree on the PR, it’s a lose lose situation for the police.

Homelessness is a complex subject matter and reductionism from an idiot politician looking for a promotion simply makes the challenge more acute.

She’s not Home Secretary anymore, thank goodness, but she’s not gone away; wait and see!

When the council and the police destroyed the tents of the homeless in Manchester a few years ago, the public brought tents for the homeless after a Facebook campaign.

The homeless that were arrested and brought before the court were freed by the judge as the judge viewed the homeless men of committing no crime, the council and the police were ordered to pay all costs.

So if is lawful to destroy the belongings of the homeless and move them on, in the court of public opinion it is not and the public will turn out in support of those in need, in some circumstances.

Yeah I agree. it's shit for society when homeless people are in plain view spoiling things for all the rest of us.

Good job renting is so cheap and available and we would never end up sleeping in a tent as we would never choose that lifestyle.

"How many people live on the streets in England. Is it thousands or tens of thousands. Not hundreds of thousands surely..."

Well Tom, there are interesting classifications, and interesting accounting techniques.

Homeless doesn't equal rough sleeping.

Precarious comes into play as well, and doesn't equal homeless or rough-sleeping.

I don't know how accounting techniques have moved on in the last 5 years, but before that, in Brighton and Hove, a "homeless" person had to be in a specific location, at a specific time, on the specific day the "rough-sleeping" auditors were coming round to do their counting.

And, for innumerable reasons, that's not a trustworthy system of accounting.

So...there are many issues with trying to count a fluid population, many of whom sofa-surf on occasion, many of whom leave towns and cities, many of whom have no IDs and use a range of names, and many of whom simply don't fall into easily audited categories, for all the reasons variety is the spice of life, but the flavour can sometimes be a bit strong.

But you are veering into socio-economics etc the more serious you become, and it would be a damned shame to see your particular brand of absurd genius moved out of Lounge into the more rabid Madosphere of Politics.

But you are veering into socio-economics etc the more serious you become, and it would be a damned shame to see your particular brand of absurd genius moved out of Lounge into the more rabid Madosphere of Politics."

Tom is not educated formally however he observes...

Most of the d*unken homeless he has encountered in London have spoken in a harsh Scottish accents..

On that basis..

Are Glasgow parks full of d*unken homeless cockneys...
