That is the same month that Suella Braverman (Home Secretary with responsibility for the police) said that she wanted to introduce policies to restrict homeless people using tents and that being homeless is a lifestyle choice. Well Tom, there are interesting classifications, and interesting accounting techniques. Homeless doesn't equal rough sleeping. Precarious comes into play as well, and doesn't equal homeless or rough-sleeping. I don't know how accounting techniques have moved on in the last 5 years, but before that, in Brighton and Hove, a "homeless" person had to be in a specific location, at a specific time, on the specific day the "rough-sleeping" auditors were coming round to do their counting. And, for innumerable reasons, that's not a trustworthy system of accounting. So...there are many issues with trying to count a fluid population, many of whom sofa-surf on occasion, many of whom leave towns and cities, many of whom have no IDs and use a range of names, and many of whom simply don't fall into easily audited categories, for all the reasons variety is the spice of life, but the flavour can sometimes be a bit strong. But you are veering into socio-economics etc the more serious you become, and it would be a damned shame to see your particular brand of absurd genius moved out of Lounge into the more rabid Madosphere of Politics. | |||
