So, I had a meeting (no, sadly business, not THAT type!) in the city centre yesterday so made my way down the street I needed to be on mindful that it is often busy and parking spaces not always available. I was able to drive slowly down the street as no one was behind me and, as luck would have it, across the other side, a car puts its indicators on and pulls out to make their way off. Nice one thinks me and I automatically stop, indicate and have my car positioned so I can move across and the reverse park. A manoeuvre I was just about to make when suddenly another car pulls out of the junction just further down and turns left so they are now on-coming traffic to me. I could have maybe zoomed across and backed may car in as quickly as I could, but, the car was on-coming traffic so, mindful I should not cause an obstruction when he a had right of way, simply waited for them to pass before crossing over to reverse into my space.

However, the car slows down. Stops. Then simply reverses very quickly into the space I was - politely - waiting for!

I of course sounded the horn and gesticulated rudely , yes out of anger but also because in their haste to take the space they were dangerously close to bumping into me.

My question is this though as I can't seem to find an answer online: Yes, of course he had right of way as he classed as oncoming traffic so I was correct to stop for him - but - did he have priority to "take" the parking space?

How annoying!! There’s no such thing in law or the Highway Code on parking space priority. It’s a perennial question and a proper dick move on his part, but not illegal.

I never struggle to find all day parking in city centres right outside the office or restaurant and if you pay the fee within 14 days you get 50% off.

I dunno about priority or rights. But he’s parking with the flow of traffic, whereas the Highway Code suggests that you shouldn’t park against the flow of traffic.

With that in mind, the ‘etiquette’ is with the other chap.

PS - I know of a rich bloke in London who used to do that back when they just had double yellows.

Technically neither of you did anything wrong, except the advice (not rule) is to avoid parking against the flow of traffic.

However, I would never "nick" a space as...

1) I try not to be a twat

2) I prefer to return to my car with it complete with all 4 tyres fully inflated. And the rear wiper still attached Haha!

There was a space, they had the ability to take that space, whereas you didn’t because you had to wait for a gap in the oncoming traffic. First come first served.

I had a similar situation outside the chippy a while back.

Only one space, oncoming car stopped waiting for gap in traffic, I came along and went straight into the space, with the flow of traffic. They were very vocal about it, just unlucky timing.

Annoying as it is, the other motorist has priority and no body owns roadside parking.

You can still call them a tosser though….

I have seen people put cones in the road to try and reserve their own parking space. Some people think that they own the road outside of their house!

If the space wasn't a marked bay you would have been parked against the flow of traffic which is a fine,used to be (perhaps still is) points,especially at night because the left bias of your headlights even on dip is straight into the eyes of oncoming.

In London as long you’re not in a tow zone it can be cheaper than finding paid parking, and much more convenient. You also can’t get a second pcn within 24 hrs..
