Idiotic teenager question, but I’m asking anyway!

Arrive at a social situation with friends. Receive hugs. Male friend hugs me and then says you smell gorgeous.

Might he be interested?

Although I do agree with you, could the phrasing "gorgeous" be a bit more?

You smell nice/smell really nice/smell lovely would be terms I'd use.

Smell gorgeous could be taken as a bit more, I suppose it depends on how it was said and the way he looked at you as he said it.

But to be on the side of caution I'd take it as him saying you smell nice.

I’m such a teenager in knowing if someone is interested or not. It’s crippling! And I over analyse everything. Everyone says if they’re interested you’ll know and if you’re confused it means they aren’t interested.

If that’s the case then no one has ever been interested - boo!

Possibly. I wouldn't put too much weight on the word though; I have a friend who is devastatingly charming and frequently describes things as gorgeous/divine.

You're not unlovable Estella, never have been, never will be.

If you think he's attracted to you, if you got that energy from him, he might be. We don't know. We're just speculating.

But less of the unlovable idea. It's never been true of you.

Mate I am exactly the same dont worry. I make the assumption that everyone is just being friendly.

Personally, if you know it won't ruin your friendship I'd say shoot your shot.

Better to know either way than just wonder.

If you think it could damage your friendship then try and suss it out a bit more going forward.

You mentioned your socially stunned so I appreciate this may be a no go for you.

If I were in this situation of questioning whether he fancies me or not, knowing I fancy him. I’d compliment him, make eye contact and show him it’s not just words to hype his self esteem.

If you don’t take the chance, perhaps you’ll lose the opportunity. May be he’s equally curious if you fancy him and knows he fancies you. The worst case, you fall back on hyping his self esteem because he’s a lovely mate.

"What actions did you take through the rest of the night to try and see if there is any interest? "

It’s not as simple as that. He’s one of my best mates, so we talked, laughed, all the usual stuff - I know he loves me as a mate (he tells me all the time) but that doesn’t mean he fancies me! And a mate that loves you is harder to read than some random you’ve never previously met doing similar things like eye contact, laughing, hand holding etc.

To clarify he doesn’t say “I love you as a mate” he says “I love you”, even I could read the signals of the former statement!

Yeah tough situation. No way to tell

I’m always of the opinion that friends are friends for a reason

Still, plenty of guys will be able to tell you about a long term woman friend they crushed hard on and did nothing about it

You’ll either need to make a more, or make it really, really, REALLY obvious you want him to make a move.

If he is interested, he’s gonna be firmly planted in the “we’re just friends don’t make a move” mindset

Best of luck

One comment is not enough to be sure, do you find him staring at you, does he always make effort to sit next to you, talk to you. Is he contacting you asking random stuff or favours. If you like him try flirting back stare at him then when he notices smile, bat your eyelids look away. Half the work is done as you already know him so can meet easily to build a connection. Good luck working it out hope it does too

Update.

Saw him again last night and he invited me to come over and hang out at his house tonight with him and his housemate. It was a casual ask whilst we were out with all our mates last night tipsy. Now I’m stressing as to whether he will remember, will he still invite me, and building it all up in my head! I hate the teenage awkwardness of liking someone messing with my head - I mean we’re mates, really good mates, so why am so aaaaggghhh overthinking? *facepalm
