What to do with my time...

So a week ago, I managed to put my back out at the gym and it's been quite painful for the first couple of days and is still slightly tender now.

I don't want to rush back and aggravate it further but I'm missing the gym a lot and feeling I get after going. Has anyone felt like this where they couldn't do what they wanted to and how did you manage to cope in the meantime until you could?

I’m a totally non-sports way I get you, I’m not able to do something I love currently and am waiting on external factors to resolve this. It’s so frustrating.

I’m trying to distract myself, pursue other opportunities, and be gentle with myself when I get upset.

Hope you feel better soon and are able to get back to it. Do you swim? I wonder if this might be a gentle interim endorphin producing substitute? Or sex? Lots of sex.

This happened to me a couple of times back in the days of being health-focused.

When it happened, i used to uphold all other components to fitness, so eating, resting, water etc, and substituted the gym sessions for light physio.

The routine helped me, but that's because I personally struggle to get back into routine (which then involved beer and eating crap) once I fall out of it.

Herts

Hurt my back REALLY badly few years ago to the point of not being able to walk. When I eventually was able to see the physio out me straight onto recovery exercises. I was a bit skeptical but recovery was rapid from then. So I would still go to the gym but focus on core strength, stretching, re hab.

Awww I hope it passes soon and those external factors get sorted out! I think I've distracted myself as much as I can and been going for long walks which has helped but still have this nagging feeling that it's not enough. Sex is a good suggestion though

I think that's great advice. I may have been guilty of snacking on more unhealthy foods because the gym hasn't been there to keep me focused on something to drive towards I'll try and keep everything consistent and see where I can work in the light physio.

I'm thinking of seeing a physio but probably want to give it another week to see if it heals by itself. I had a shoulder problem before and the exercises they suggested helped massively!

Manchester (she/her)

Physio or exercises that won't exacerbate your back and will help in other ways?

Aw, Joe. I’m sorry you’re injured.

There was a manager in one of the gyms that I used to go to… he was in really fantastic shape. We got to talking one day and he told me that he had broken his back once. He had been a ballet dancer. You’d never have known that anything like that had happened to him. If I remember right, he had several surgeries.

The main point though, is that while he was recovering, he started doing Pilates. He told me that Pilates was designed for injured dancers.

Maybe worth looking into?

Get well soon

I'd be quite happy to distract you

Realise early and young that the body ages and stops working like it used to

The sooner you learn how to work around that, the better you’ll be, because the older you get, the more you’ll need to do that

That means not skipping the gym, but just realising what you can and can’t do to make it work today

Go hit arms. 8 hour arm session

Worthing

Take a steady local walk. Usually laying down feels good but can stop proper healing with most sports injuries.
