Do any of you going through perimenopause or menopause take any supplements and does it help?

I'm only 43 but think I might be going through perimenopause. Will discuss with my Dr first obviously.

I'm 43 and recently i've been getting heart palpitations, I'm so tired all the time and I ache even when I've not been to the gym or done anything. No hot flushes yet thankfully

I am also coming to the end of my current coil and need that replacing (fun times) so could potentially be this causing issues.

Just wondered if anyone took any over the counter supplements and how they helped.

Health & Her do a good perimenopause supplement, but it's not going to deal with the symptoms as well as HRT. The Davina McCall book, Menopausing I think it's called, is very informative if you want to know your stuff before going to see your GP.

I do but I had peri menopause confirmed on my bloods first. I took iron and menopause multi vit supplements first and that happily took me through till I started menopause 3 years ago. now I have a tailored to me, range of supplements. Holland and Barrett do a free menopause symptom supplement chat that may help

You've got many symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Ask for a thyroid function test too.

Oh just looked it up. Will ring my Dr tomorrow and get booked in for a chat and see what they think.

I also might mention b12 levels as I'm on long term Metformin and I know that can affect b12 uptake

Ryde

Just over a year ago, I had ablation surgery, where they burned away the lining of the womb. I used to get hot flushes, and other associated menopausal stuff.

After the surgery, nothing! The surgery is still quite specialist, as was asked if I wouldn't mind 12 med students watching the operation. I said yes, of course!

Touch wood, no problems whatsoever.

HRT patches. Testosterone gel. The nutrition geeks - the iron energy supplement with zinc, the b12 (two types) vitamin D and ashwanandha

All discussed with my GP first.

Iron, vit b12 and vit D are quite commonly low in peri

Thanks for the info about the nutrition geeks. Handy it's on Amazon. Was it hard to get testosterone gel prescribed?

I cannot recommend a trio of shilajit, ashwangandha and magnesium enough. All three tablets are a total menopause game changer. They calm the anxiety down, help sleep at night and give you a boost. I also throw a turmeric and black pepper one in aa well

"You've got many symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Ask for a thyroid function test too. "

I agree before starting to take anything get some blood tests done by your GP so that you know exactly what is going on and receive the right treatment.

I had a new mirena as part of my HRT

I might have to go private for that as there's no mention on the NHS

Next Door

Research magnesium, ashwagandha, zinc and vit b complex. Black maca also helps with sex drive.

There is a guy in TT "the hormone doctor", who gives really good advice on supplements and nutrition and offers private phone appointments at a discounted price.

An understanding and knowledgeable doctor will prescribe a mirena. However they're expensive and they don't like using them if they feel you might ask to have it removed early.

The NHS definitely fits mirena coils. Maybe ask to see a specialist menopause clinic, rather than the ordinary GP.

I have it already. I'm on my third...big fan! Haven't had a period for years.

So the progesterone part is probably sorted.

What I'd need to go private for is to find hormone levels. I think the standard is just doing trial and error without any blood tests. I don't think I have access to a menopause clinic. Not on the NHS

I had a hormone level check blood test on the NHS only a few weeks ago so they definitely do it. It took a fair amount of back and forth to get it but I got there eventually. Good luck

I’d ask your doctor for a full blood test including the thyroid before opting to buy any supplements.

Blood tests are not always useful when it comes to identify perimenopause, but would be useful to discount other potential causes.

Supplement wise magnesium and berberine has been instrumental for me, besides HRT and heavy lifting in the gym. Berberine helps with weight and hormone fluctuations.

Look into Dr Louise Newsam she is extremely knowledgeable on both Perimenopause and Menopause, she has books out and a YouTube channel and an app. I’m currently struggling my sleep is shot to bits and I’ve had a few hot flushes. My sex drive has gone abroad on vacation ffs. I also have osteoporosis in my joints so yes it’s a whale of a time at the moment. Good luck OP

Everyone is different though so best to ask the doc for a full blood test as Berberine for example may keep the liver from removing bilirubin fast enough so causes other problems. I have high bilirubin found in a routine blood test so best to be safe with medical knowledge on yourself than just opting to trial something that suits someone else

Did you manage to get this on NHS?

You can definitely have your hormone levels checked on the NHS here in Northern Ireland, assuming your Trust offers it.
