Anybody else have a circle of friends in a different country?

Leeds/Bradford

Just curious to see if anybody else does, and how it compares to those over here in England for you?

I've got a close set of friends in the Netherlands, met a few times so far and now we've done our plans for music it'll be a whole lot more frequent..slowly learning their language too. We all get along like a house on fire because of a certain music genre (Gabber, over here it has no scene, but there it is HUGE and going strong for thirty years,) they are mad into it too, on the scene for twenty years now...even have tattoos on their heads of raves/producers and such. But every time I'm over there and around them going to raves and networking I find everything to be so much more relaxed and happier than here. Hardly any aggro amongst them and they're all just out to meet and form great friendships (I'm a producer of this music too, which is why they respect me and welcomed me with open arms..and I'm get serious too with an investment in a real production room, so it is vital that I have links there for the music.)

Seems England has lost its touch in a way. Everybody is appearing to live for the weekend and nothing else but a good drink. Obviously not everybody, but it is hard to find people who are individuals in this country, oh and people with decency and mutual respect for one and other. Everything here seems so depressing sometimes, aimless and not a speck of ambition in sight...BUT, I do love where I live here and its history with writers, and certain things about here that I would never change and so proud to call my home. Just adding that incase I come across as an England hater, which I'm not!

Other there, everything works like clockwork. The raves have zero fights, people highly frown upon rudeness/people who brag about riches and all around just treat eachother with full blown love and respect. Certainly opened my eyes up to the world and how much more there is out there. Once I have the language down to perfection, and the music rolling there...I'm moving there! That is if I haven't somehow gotten somebody pregnant or anything that ties me down here. Much, much, much more to The Netherlands than legal and whorehouses. Always amazes me that people hardly ever stray past Amsterdam when the villages and other cities are just as beautiful!

Although the Dutch can be a tad bizarre for most people. Took a while for it all to sink in at first lol

I've lived in nearly every area of England, and most of Scotland as a child. I love my West Yorkshire villages, but London, Liverpool, Leeds or Manchester don't come close to the Netherlands! The people especially!

Met a Dutch girl who worked for Lufthansa when working in the Middle East.

She was a beautiful girl with a very laid back personality but she moved to the USA and eventually married an American guy.

(She/ her) in Sensualityland

I have friends in almost every European country - it is a result of travelling with the Forces but also due to my intrest in languages and cultures.

I cannot really say anything in general about any of the cultures I have encountered as people from with the same culture, country and even neighbourhood can (and are) sooo different - it would not do them justice.

I have a group of friends in New York City that I go out in the evening with, though this is my 2nd year of not going. We do chat online etc.

They are a family and quite religious, its not so obvious how we differ when we chat online but face to face they are different. I also have a friend who is a cop for NYPD, he's a really helpful and caring type, my tiour guide really

I have a circle of friends in Brisbane. Obviously don't get out there too often. Every few years or so but I stay for a month so loads of socialising.

You've done well to live in nearly every area of England at age 22!

I've lived in each major region of England except for the north east, far south east and the east, and still wouldn't pretend to know very much about most of the country. But I know enough of each of the places you mention to know that if you didn't meet people who have each of those qualities you list, you didn't learn much of them at all.

Why not enjoy your friends in the Netherlands without having to knock the ones you presumably still have here?

I'm only knocking the differences in interests. All my mates are the typical lager louts, so I need to have a different set. I have some that are just like me though, but they tend to be girls. Nothing wrong with that though! Not knocking them, just knocking most of what goes around here (pubs etc)

I've lived all over the place. The main qualities I go over there for is Gabber raves and the people into it...and you don't get that anywhere else in the world (Trust me, I go to them here too. Usually ends in a glassing and tiny, tiny crowd. Over there they pull 30,000 people a month at loads of events! See the difference?) People from Japan and NZ travel to Holland just for these raves. That's how special it is.

I lived - Skipton, Dundee, Glasgow, Keighley, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Wirral, York Manchester, Leeds, London (East and South East,) Milton Keynes/Bletchley, Bradford, Haworth and a very, very short spell in Lancing.

Yeah, 22 years and all of that. Keeping steady friends isn't easy with that in mind. I'm not pretending to know everything about the country, just implied I've seen most of it. Your reply seems awfully catish to me. I was only asking if people enjoyed a circle of friends elsewhere...sorry, but England is rather bland and not full of very friendly people. I even have family in most of these places mentioned so I have good ties. Nothing compares to over there. People over there know more about Yorkshire heritage than most Yorkshire people I know. Says a lot for me!

My main point of going to The Netherlands is how nice the people are and the music scene, and people travel from all over the world every month JUST for that...so I guess they must be missing something in their own countries too?

Or maybe The Netherlands is very special in that respect. Actually, no maybe about it...it definitely is!

Good to hear so many others have links everywhere. I have some online ones from USA too from ED websites I use, though have yet to meet any. Have it in the works but it is just a matter of buying the ticket and doing it!

Well we've all seen those kind of knobs - not just in this country!

This is the first time I've ever heard Dutch music tastes applauded though

Exactly. But it is the longest running rave scene ever, has the biggest rave turn outs, its own subculture and attracts hives from all over the world.

Dutch Hardcore only resonates with some, and those that it does...we stick together like glue and gladly travel far and wide so we can party together.

Dutch Hardcore is about to hit it's third generation...roll on another three!

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

My ex loves the netherlands. I once asked him why he didn't move there as he has a few friends there. He said 'the weather'.

I have travelled all over the world and have had lots of fun sampling other cultures, but I love the UK and I love my UK friends too.

Watch out for Headhunterz btw...he'e signed with a poplabel/sold out just recently and I can bet you money everyone will be raging about him soon.

Dutch are the leaders in electronic music anyway, world renowned for being the best so I'm unsure where you've heard it isn't applauded. Tiesto ring a bell? Think he has more fans than any other DJ in the world...And he's as Dutch as a Windmill
