"i am not sure i like crufts or the kennel club. they promote the breeding of physical deformaties into species. Oe of the last winners (a pomeranian) had to be sat on an ice block because he had too much hair and was prone to over heating! how is that a prime example of a breed?" I agree.

Oe of the last winners (a pomeranian) had to be sat on an ice block because he had too much hair and was prone to over heating! how is that a prime example of a breed?" my dog had loads of health problems as a puppy due to bad breeding, I took him on knowing this as the breeder was going to drown him as he couldn't be sold, cost me a small fortune to put him right That's how it goes tho with dogs with a lot of so called breeders, if they cant make a buck off them they don't want them I was watching someing on TV about breeding once and apparently a dog that wont best of breed in some dog show was actually dieing due to some deformity caused by inbreeding, but because he looked good on the outside he won, how can a internally deformed dog be best of any breed? its all about looks in afraid

It's down to breeders not the kennel club!! However in my opinion they do need to change to stop this happening. Ya get a family buy a nice dog decide they want puppies so mate it, 9 weeks later they have them with no thought to the stud dog used. This is the problem they don't know the dogs lines and faults. We have been breeding and showing all my life we were heavily into blood lines etc, but did have a random dog with bad eyes etc nothing is perfect. My opinion the kennel club should change the accredited breeder scheme currently most people can go on it so theese problems will continue. If they said that only breeders that have won challenge certificates at shows can go on the list then the person buying know it's a reputable breeder. If a dog has not won or the owners dogs have not won then the puppies can't be kennel club registered. My opinion this would cut the majority of bad lines in dogs, and the 'real' breeders would be more than happy with this as they know there dogs are good stock.

" the kennel club set the breed standards do they not? for instance, a rhodesian ridgeback must have a prominant ridge on its spine according to the breed standards...yet this ridge is actually spina biffida bred into the dog! the kennel club run crufts yet they allow a dog who cannot regulate its own body temperature to win best in show because it looks like a fluff ball.

They do indeed set standards but how is the breed standard checked over breeding and dishonest judges change things. Take for instance the German Shepard 10 years ago it was never so small and it's back so arched. that's why the kennel club has a special measures list they are trying to change things but its going to take time. The major groups judges from recent days are all old school, I've know most of them from being a child. They do spot check on judges at shows etc. I saw a lady disqualified today by one of the top brass as she tapped rather hard her dog on the nose while waiting to go into the ring. He happen to walk past at the time. But as I say it's my opinion in our breed today out of all the dogs there only 2 I would have in our kennels and half of them there in my opinion should not have qualified even for the show.
